COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Jacob Spears, our 6th Great Grand Uncle, is credited as the first distiller to label his whiskey "Bourbon." He built his distillery in Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1790 - 203 years before began brewing. While obviously a bit too late to produce Uncle Jacobís wash, weíve instead created something far more complex. In his honor, we present this robust, silky smooth, full-bodied and altogether extremely American rendition of an Imperial Stout aged for 6 months in the very finest bourbon barrels. This explains a lot about our penchant for big brews! Itís in our blood!
Brewed with Rocky Mountain Water, Malter Barley, Flaked Oats, Hops and Yeast.

Bottled March 2012. Pours reddish black, no head. Aroma is bourbon, plum, cherry, cacao, caramel, deep and rich. Taste is brandied raisin, cacao, bourbon, maple, bitter coffee. Slightly harsh, boozy, and woody finish. Very good.

The definition of Big Beer. And this works. Usually at this ABV level, Iím all "meh." However, this one is syrupy smooth, with a flavor to match the ABV.

Poured from the Howler(32oz), black brew, minimal head of tan foam that leaves the scene quickly. Cost, $25.99 Nose tells me thereís a lot of Bourbon, roasted malt, dark chocolate, pitted fruit, some coffee. Smells uber strong. Bourbon, chocolate, and roasted malt envelop my palate. With a bit of nudging, the dark fruit..plums & raisins, come out to play. The coffee I mentioned is very very light, err, perhaps Iím not getting any at all; the other flavours are THAT strong and THAT dominant. The body is on the high end of medium, carbonation checks in as fairly light but thereís no mistaking this brew as flat. Powerful brewski here and though the taste isnít as "hot" as it could be, once it goes down the hatch, it brings a heck of a lot of warming. As much as I love this beer, I donít feel the need to get more...

Bottle poured into a snifter..cauldron black with a thin beige head..aroma of booze,coffee,licorice,molasses,wood..boozy up front but gives way to smooth licorice and coffee notes..Uncle Jacob would be proud..really good offering from Avery.

Bottle. A couple years old. Huge marshmallow nose, chocolate, vanilla, port. Airy, ethereal body, full yet light and airy. Very sweet and boozy chocolate marshmallow smores. Sticky finish. A bit too sweet and overwhelming, but pretty great.

Black with small tan head. Aroma is full of very sweet chocolate. Flavor is similar, over sweet, chocolate, almost no bourbon or roast. This is alright, but too sweet and lacking complexity.

Batch no 4. Bottled Feb 13, 2015. This was poured into a mini snifter. The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a thin concave lacing after a one finger off white head dissipated within about a minute. The smell had a sweet bourbon with nice roasty notes and a smooth sticky chocolate with an underlying gently smokey oakiness. The taste was sweet and roasty smooth leading into a big super smooth roasty aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with sticky notes strolling over my tongue. Carbonation was felt nicely. Overall, I say this was a wonderful bourbon barrel stout that I would definitely have it again.

Bottle, opaque black beer, brown sugar colored head fades to a skiff leaving some lace. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, sugar cookies, oak, raisins, toasted barley. Taste is bourbon, vanilla, peanuts, anise, cookies, alcohol, molasses, shoyu. Palate thick, nearly syrup, carbonation subdued. Alcohol is strong, but doesnít taste like 17%. Sweetness is, however, a bit much. As desert itís ok, but I donít even want to finish the 12oz. bottle in one night.
