Jacob Spears, our 6th Great Grand Uncle, is credited as the first distiller to label his whiskey "Bourbon." He built his distillery in Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1790 - 203 years before began brewing. While obviously a bit too late to produce Uncle Jacobís wash, weíve instead created something far more complex. In his honor, we present this robust, silky smooth, full-bodied and altogether extremely American rendition of an Imperial Stout aged for 6 months in the very finest bourbon barrels. This explains a lot about our penchant for big brews! Itís in our blood!
Brewed with Rocky Mountain Water, Malter Barley, Flaked Oats, Hops and Yeast.

Served from a 12 oz bottle from OTM. The appearance is a rich glossy black with some ruby edges. A nice mahogany head. Rich roasty malts, sweet brown sugar, bourbon, and barrel fill the nose, with a heavy booziness but not a pure alcohol. The flavors follow with a rich full roast malt, sweet oaky bourbon, peanut butter blossom cookies, brown sugar, molasses, very nutty, some buttery-ness. Very full mouth with a good drying oak on the tongue and a alcohol burn on the roof and cheeks. The booziness is there but itís not raw alcohol heat. It is full of flavor and intensity. I can see why there is a lot of love for this brew and I can see why some people would give it a lower rating. I really enjoyed it and itís worth seeking out.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Black with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate, bourbon, light vanilla and some caramel. Similar taste. Sweet and with a thick body. The finish was long and with well hidden alcohol. A nice one to sip.

Vanilla, bourbon, cocoa, smoke, tobacco flavors. A massive one. Smoother than the Bourbon Counties maybe. Coconut. Fantastic.

Aroma is bourbon, chocolate malts. touches of coffee. wood. vanilla. Appearance is dark black with tan head. Taste is impeccable. Deep chocolate boozy goodness with complex notes of vanilla, carmel. coffee. bourbon. I do wonder what "the finest bourbon barrels" means to Avery. I donít doubt them though, because this truly tastes like it. Palate is thick and boozy. Overall one of the most enjoyable beers Iíve ever tried.

12 ounce bottle, Batch No. 4, bottled on Feb 13, 2015 (16.9% ABV). Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that stuck around a while. Thereís also a good amount of lacing. I like the aroma a lot, the brew smells like bourbon, wood, vanilla, coffee, chocolate, and dark fruit. The flavor is even better, it tastes like bourbon, vanilla, molasses, dark fruit, caramel, chocolate, espresso, burnt/charred malt, and a bit of licorice. Mouthfeel/body is full, itís silky and smooth with moderate carbonation. For a beer this strong itís very easy to drink! I thought this was really good, itís a great example of a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. Itís a must try if you come across a bottle.

At Richís Massive Cellar Emptying Tasting. Uncle Jacob Avery 16.53% 2013. Deep brown/black with a purple edge to it. Harsh bourbon maple syrup sweet maltiness. Raspy mouthfeel on a med-full body. Incredibly boozy, harsh, maple syrup, bourbon, caramel nice but way too boozy in my opinion.

2015 vintage. Pours black with a dense espresso coloured head, no retention. Aroma has bourbon, raisins, plum, dark chocolate and some alcohol. Taste is mostly sweet with bourbon, vanilla, raisins, soy, slight bitterness, peppery notes, cocoa/dark chocolate and alcohol heat. Full body, prickly yet soft carbonation, super smooth. Long bitter after taste with raisin and alcohol.

Surprisingly little alcohol presence considering the strength. Fantastic BBA Imperial Stout. Quite steep price tag though.
