Pachyderm Pale Wheat is an American pale wheat. The aroma is clean and hoppy with hints of citrus. The taste is pleasantly hoppy and smooth. We all know that elephants never forget. So when the Birmingham Zoo acquired six new baby elephants (part of the Pachyderm mammal family) we knew that our beloved Miss Fancy would have wanted us to help take care of them. So each and every time you enjoy a pint of our delicious Pachyderm Pale Wheat, we’ll donate 3% of the profits to help the Birmingham Zoo care for their elephant herd. Trunks Up to that!

On tap at brewery. Pours a cloudy golden color. Aroma is fruity and hoppy. Taste is fruity with a little more hoppiness than I was expecting. Enjoyed it, definitely worth a try.

Appearance: A bit cloudy, light golden-orange body in hue with a slim, white head.

Smell: A bready, sugar-edged maltiness with amiable citrus notes of sweet, mild lemon and grapefruit.

Taste: PPW has a nice, characterful maltiness with a vibrant breadiness having itself a toasted sugar element to it. A small pop of citrus that settles down. Low bitterness. A little last-minute sweetness and snap of citrus and carbonation on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: While most pale wheat ales fall into a line of vapid, lacking offerings, this one breaks the mold with a surprisingly rich maltiness. Nice beer!

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2014 Draft. Hazy orange with a medium white head. Aroma of hops but also with a slight cabbage note. Medium/light body with malt sweetness upfront and notes of stone-fruit and wheat. -- Much better on second sampling. More citrus hop aroma and the cabbage is gone. Nice hop bitterness and wheat body.

UPDATED: DEC 18, 2013 Draft in taproom. Poured a slightly hazy straw with a small white head. Aroma and flavor were quite hoppy. Lots of citrus, a bit of pine, some spice. Light, sweet wheat, without much banana or clove. Medium light palate. Quite crisp; prickly carbonation. -- Rerate: I’ve had this quite a few times now and am really coming to like it. Did some more research on the American "pale wheat" beer and now get what they’re going for. And they nailed it. As I understand it, "pale" refers to the lack of yeast normally added to a hefeweizen, the yeast that gives those beers their usual flavor profile of banana and clove. So a pale wheat highlights the smooth, slightly sweet, refreshing character of that grain, without the flavors that actually come from the use of the weizen yeast.
