Avondale’s beloved Miss Fancy the Elephant’s favorite pastime was to guzzle bootleg beer and whiskey. We share Miss Fancy’s affinity for tasty brews, which is why we were inspired to add a twist to one of our favorites: with hints of exotic vanilla extract, we think the Vanillaphant Porter would have been one of Miss Fancy’s favorites too!

The Vanillaphant is a superb vanilla porter, an ale which is surprisingly light bodied for its robust flavor and has all the chocolate and roasted nut flavors you would expect in a porter but with a special vanilla twist at the end. We use the worlds finest hand selected vanilla beans from the bourbon islands of Madagascar in our recipe. The malty and vanilla sweetness are perfectly balanced with hoppy bitterness.

Draft @ Mugshots, BHM. Nice aroma of roasty and a little vanilla. Dark and opaque, with a touch of reddish brown on the edges. Tan head, but quickly dissipates. Nice balance of vanilla and chocolate malt. Full bodied. Overall a really good vanilla porter! Tastes very similar to mine, but maybe a touch less vanilla.

1/28/15. On tap at Cooter Brown’s, Jacksonville, AL. Black pour with a small tan head, mild lacing. Nice aroma, good porter aspects, malty, nutty, smooth chocolate, a little roast, subtle vanilla. Good flavor, vanilla shines a little more, milk chocolate, roast pops a little more with a hint of hop bitterness to balance it out. Maybe a little light bodied, could be silkier, but it actually suits it and goes down well. Much better than the wheat can I tried.

From a bottle purchased in Huntsville. Pours very dark brown with a fizzy tan head. Tastes like mild coffee, dark cocoa, toast, roasted malt, and dry vanilla. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like cocoa and vanilla, burnt coffee, and toast.

Bottle shared by snoworsummer. Pours deep, dark brown with creamy tan head. Aroma is chocolate, vanilla, lightly roasted malts, faint prunes, and faint toffee. Flavor matches the nose with chocolate and roast malts forward, light earthiness, and some vanilla and dark fruit sweetness. Medium body and carbonation.

Thanks to Terry for bringing this back from Alabama --- Opaque brown/black with a bubbly brown rim head, light strings of lace. Taste is lightly toasted malt with a light addition of vanilla. It moves inoffensively to a light bittering in a short finish, adding some dark dried fruit on the way. A big brew, agreeable, but not great.

Poured a dark brown from the tap with aromas of roast, light chocolate, some earth aromas and light vanilla. Flavors match the aromas light sweet vanilla in the aftertaste, creamy on the palate, nice overall.
