You want a great example of malt done right? Then look no further than this beer. Wonderful slightly buttery with caramel, toffee and a hint of salt. Rich in malt and absolutely fantastic. What is possibly this beer’s best characteristic is the very light undercurrent of coffee. Aromas are of buttered raisin toast, I don’t know how else to describe it but it is fantastic. Full bodied but not overly so, pleasant. Finish starts sweet but is not at all cloying. Then enters a nice light bitterness and slight crisp bite.Deep mahogany in color with a medium tan head that lasts. This is a great beer, one of the best I’ve had in a long time quite honestly. Gotta give it to those Germans sometimes being brilliant in the basics of brewing can lend a more superior product that those seeking the extremes of the craft just to chase down the next "imperial" thing. Great beer.

500ml bottle @ the 8th Shrewsbury Bottle Share, courtesy of blackhaddock down there. Pours dark amber with creamy off-white head. Very nice dunkel with good smooth malts and a nice subtle sweetness. A great example of the style.

Pours dark brown, with moderate head. Smell has some notes of coffe and dried plumbs. Taste is mild, body follows the first sip. A caramel aftertaste. A nice dunkel specimen.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Half-litre bottle: BBD Jan 15. Shared between four at the Sep 2014 Shrewsbury bottle swap. Clear dark mahogany with a full off-white head. Semi-sweet maltiness fills your nose and it tastes also of roasted/toasted malts, some fruit notes also, but mostly and mainly a good malty flavour. Fuller in the body than most Dunkel beers I have had: I really enjoyed this one.

Hazy dark amber color, small off-white head. Caramel aroma with hints of coffee. Kind of oily. Thin body, average carbonation. Slightly sweet. Not bad at all.

Bottle, as pictured. Great beer....chocolate, caramel, toffee. Smooth and silky but not too heavy. Just doesn’t get much better than a perfectly made German beer.

While not the most full-bodied beer I’ve had, Ayinger’s Dunkel proved to be very complex and satisfying. With flavors of dark fruit, caramel, chocolate, coffee, and subtle nuttiness, its profile is unusual but very nicely balanced. I also liked the sweet malt smell and just-right level of carbonation. For a beer with 5% ABV, Altbairisch Dunkel offers a lot of flavor and refreshment.
