3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 12/20
500 ml bottle poured into pint glass. Appearance is dark ruby/brown with very thin off-white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is rich toffee and caramel with a slight plum scent as well. Taste is similar, though less strong and with a distinct lager taste. Smooth, lightly carbonated feel. I was expecting a bit more chocolate, but otherwise about what I expected. A good, though somewhat weak, beer.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle, as pictured. Great beer....chocolate, caramel, toffee. Smooth and silky but not too heavy. Just doesn’t get much better than a perfectly made German beer.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
While not the most full-bodied beer I’ve had, Ayinger’s Dunkel proved to be very complex and satisfying. With flavors of dark fruit, caramel, chocolate, coffee, and subtle nuttiness, its profile is unusual but very nicely balanced. I also liked the sweet malt smell and just-right level of carbonation. For a beer with 5% ABV, Altbairisch Dunkel offers a lot of flavor and refreshment.

2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
A- Malty, sweet, slightly fruity.
A- Dark amber color, clear liquid, thin head.
T- Malty, slightly roasty, slight fruits, slighly sweet, chocolate.
P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish.
O- Not bad, but less than I was expecting. Ayinger produces some good beers but not have been near as rich or complex as I have hoped for. Seemed yet again to be a good beer that is a little watery.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a clear mahogany color with a one finger head just off white foam. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to leave a tons of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of caramel and brown sugar with a bit of a roasted malt aroma. Some light chocolate smells as well as some molasses and plum are there as well. Overall the aroma is rather sweet.
Taste – The taste begins with a lightly roasted and toasted bready flavor with some sweeter notes of a fruity nature with some plum and cherry. As the taste advances, a caramel and molasses sweetness joins the flavor all while some flavors of a light coffee and chocolate come to the tongue. Some more grainy flavors as well as some more roasted flavors come to the tongue after the cocoa and coffee. At the same time, a bit of an earthy and herbal hop come to the tongue, and in the end, mix with the sweeter and roasted flavors nicely to leave a smooth, lightly toasted, and sweeter flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is average in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side. The average carbonation and body are rather a nice bled for the darker but yet very drinkable nature of the brew.
Overall – For a dunkel lager this is on the slightly sweeter side, but very drinkable and quite enjoyable. A rather good easy drinking darker lager.
