tupalev (2311), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 5, 2005 Updated: Nov 19, 2005 Bottle, Chester’s, Hamilton. Shared by Doug; Cheers Doug. No idea how old this bottle was but it held up very well. Very dark brown pour, with a decent sized tan head. One of the best aroma’s I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing, just a huge combo of various malts that produce a gorgeous sweet scent. The mouthfeel was actually thinner than I expected with a nice refreshing crispness to it, which balanced off the many chocolate, caramel, and roasted flavours, along with a decent amount of bitterness. I found it finished very dry. This was a wonderful experience; I wonder if you can do any better in this style.
Re-rate - I’ll knock it down a few notches from its original 4.4 lofty perch, as I had a much bigger sample shared with Hogtown Harry, GregClow, and Blankboy, and a fresher bottle (courtesy of Harry) and it didn’t do as much for me. The aroma was still good but didn’t blow me away, and I enjoyed it, just didn’t find it nearly as complex as before. Still a world class beer.
cmillward (213), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 13, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small cream colored head. Super malty aroma, reminiscent of wort on brewday, hints of dry dogfood. Flavor is extremely malty with an almost salty taste, a touch sweet. Medium mouthfeel, quite smooth. hop_lover (155), Corpus Christi, Texas, USA Oct 12, 2008 As for a doppelbock... this one is the cream of the crop. First of all it is sooo smooth. Rare in a db. The aging has to be the trick. Very balanced in character. The commercial description says it all realy. EHopper (147), Minnesota, USA Oct 12, 2008 Dark, Dark carmel with a creamy light tan head. Very malty and molasses nose. Flavor is a burst of aching nostalgia for me, remembering the dark, sweat, home made bread my grandma made on our North Dakota farm. Great lingering finish.

Rich malty aromas - melanoidins, toasty, bready, slight hints of molasses
Dark brown, clear, ruby highlights. Tan head with light retention
Rich malty sweetness with bready, toasty notes. A bit of bitterness to support the long malty finish
Medium body, medium-high carbonation, prickly
Nice doppelbock, the molasses seems out of place as does the prickly carbonation mesperon (29), Jersey City, New Jersey, USA Oct 11, 2008 Pours deep deep cola brown with no head (maybe too cold). Beautiful port-like aroma, wih roasted malt, and barely a hint of coffee and chocolate.. Slightly sweet, a little raisiny, and lots of alcohol. Mouthfeel is smooth, deep cich caramel taste that develops more on the finish. Just the right bit of bitterness to alance the caramel, hints of roasted malt. Delicious beer.
