3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 spilledpint (277) - Iowa, USA - JAN 11, 2011
16.9 oz. bottle from John’s Grocery Iowa City
Ar: Classic hefe aroma. Nice spicy clove notes along with touches of cinnamon, ginger, and banana.
Ap: Pours an extremely hazy medium copper with a massive pillowy weizen head that sits atop my weizen. The head lasts quite a while. Pretty beer.
T: Big burnt sugar note is quite a surprise. The flavor is like a spicy version of bananas flambe. There’s a bit of tartness on the finish to balance this beer, which is somewhat sweet. Edit: I just realized why this doesn’t taste like a Hefe: It isn’t one. Beer rating fail.
P: Fizzy, chewy hefe body.
O: Man, this is a very good dark wheat. It’s not particularly dark for a dunkles hefe-weizen. Upon pouring, I thought this was a standard weizen, and I was a bit confused by the burnt sugar flavor.

Pours a hazy cloudy golden hue with a fast vanishing frothy light head. Aroma slight hints of apple. Taste on the light side but solid. Nice malty rush with somewhat of a fruit like finish. Can’t beat the price for this beer for the quality you get. I almost forgot why I once called Ayinger my favorite beer.

bottle - pours a cloudy copper color with huge fluffy pure white head. Aroma has definite clove notes, as well as honey, bananna, pear, lychee fruit, touch of vanilla. Flavor has cloves and bananna as well, with a touch of caramel and stone fruit, hint of lemon, orange zest, ginger, yeast. Finish is a touch sweet. A bit thin on the palate, but a very nice brew overall.

A: The pour is a little light for what I’m used to seeing out of a Dunkelweizen. A light copper color with a massive, soapy, off-white head.
S: Starts off with the usual suspects such as banana, bubblegum, and clove. An almost sourdough breadiness which is a bit different as well. Some hints of floral hops are present as well.
T: A big blast of banana and clove flavors to begin. Fairly sweet with a surprisingly prominent level of floral hoppiness. A subtle to moderate bitterness and some light citrus. Not quite as bready and hearty as I had hoped for.
M: The body is medium with a pretty high level of carbonation that gives a slightly creamy feel.
D: Dunkelweizens continue to be a bit of a weird style to me. This one was one of the better examples I’ve had, but still not quite as enjoyable as a traditional hefeweizen or weizenbock.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 otakuden (1490) - Vero Beach, USA - DEC 6, 2010
Appearance: bready orange with a tinge of amber here and there. Fluffy white head, slightly off-color, fades slowly into a thick blanket. Haze throughout her whole body thanks in all parts to her unfiltered darker wheat delights. Swirls with small bits of lace.
Nose: honey whole grains; touch of weight much like honey whole grain bagels and loaves. Almond nuttiness. Hint of greenness with banana peels before giving way to fresh moist banana bran muffins.
Palate: full, chewy, and bready with a medium weight. Sweetness of ripe bananas and honey underneath while her top is bright with green banana peels. Dry roasted whole almonds for a subtle pervasive nuttiness. Honey kisses whole grains while bran muffins enjoy a generous drizzle of that sweet sticky nectar of the bees for a continual chewy and moist mouthfeel and body. Almost non-existent presence of cloves; faint and flickering. Green bananas linger in the finish with more ripe bananas settling in the back of each swallow.
Final Thoughts: I’ve had many a dunkel Weisse of heavier darker designs, and yet there is something about the Ayinger Ur-Weisse which oozes class and timeless sophistication. Certainly not new to the German beer scene, Ayinger has a quintessential classic in their Ur-Weisse which I would gladly enjoy on a very regular basis.

pours a cloudy apple cider with a generous head that dissipates to 1/8". Taste is of banana pudding and vanilla wafers, finishing with a tart bitter carbonation. The finish lingers, moving back toward the bananas. A tasty brew, but a bit heavy for session drinking.

500 ml bottle. pored into a weizen glass. Hazy amber with an off white head. Left lacing in the glass. Nice tart wheat, brown sugar, banana clove aromas. Smooth medium body. Malty sweet glazed banana flavor with mild clove and tart wheat to balance. Maybe a hint of apple. Very good dunkel.
