Our Ayinger Ur-Weisse is an old-fashioned wheat with some fine roasted malt to give it more color and flavor than golden hefe- weisse. It has an immense crown of lovely foam held proudly above a robe of translucent amber. On the palate, malt and yeast predominate, with a delicious balance of fruit and bread-like yeast. The taste is complex, with suggestions of soft fruit, apple, and, in the finish, perhaps, even cloves.

Ayinger Ur-Weisse (DE) - Dunkelweizen - 5.8% - 4.4/5

On tap at Ayinger Braustuberl, Aying, august 2014. (also bottled, right now)
Dark orange to hazelnut color, obviously cloudy, enormous white head, magnificent. Not dark as other dunklers.
Quite perfumed, not excessively though.
Intense weizen aroma (wheat), sugary malts, fuity and spicy. Banana, peach, yellow fruits with hints of lemon. Doughy yeast, yet not too invading. Alcohol reminded me of whiteboard marker, thus bottled i didn’t find this. Some grassy hops comes to say hello thru the finish.
Articulated fruity taste, sweetish, slightly sour, full bodied, long finish with an amaretto/almond thing, very tasty. Proper carbonation, dusty to creamy texture, very fluffy. Excellent. WOW, the finish is just superb, sticky, ultra-umami.
Also bottled after 5 months doesn’t lose its freshness. Probably this is THE dunkelweizen, either not really dunkel, it’s a powered up weizen, simple, classic, elegant. A whoppy 4.4 for a classic non-experimental beer? Well, yes. Pick your bags, go to Aying on a nice summer day, sit at their stube and have one of this. You won’t be in need for any Double IPA, Quadrupel or whathever. Just enjoy.

Off white creamy head. Cloudy dark amber colour. Aroma is malty, fruity with citrus, apple and pear notes, with very light roasty and caramel notes. Flavor is malty with fruity (pear and apricot) and biscuits tones, ending in a moderately fruity and slighty candy finish. Medium bodied.

Bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy amber body under a one finger foamy white head that had decent retention. The nose is slightly fruity and estery with a fair amount of yeastiness. A light hint of bubble gum, and a hint of light toasted malt. The flavor is pretty classic, some lightly roasted malt, nice yeastiness, some fruity esters, and seemingly a hint of alcohol on the late finish. Light to medium bodied with soft fizzy carbonation and a lingering finish. Pretty classic example of the style, enjoyable.

Super cloudy dark golden yellow color. Arguably the cloudiest beer I’ve ever seen. Everything inside seems to just stand still. The aroma is not like a typical hefe: yeast softness; dark, pungent fruits; an herbal spiciness, not unlike cloves. Orange zest with a prickly spice. Hint of green apple and red apple skins too. The flavor is mashed plums, cinnamon on apple sauce. Bread dough. A definite basement funk to the flavor. Touch of apricot, but not the cloying, sugary kind I hate in beers. Feels juicy and slick on the palate. This is a crowd-pleaser: lots of darkish flavors, but nothing burnt. Lots of sweetish flavors, but nothing saccharine. Beautifully balanced for a very cold autumn evening.

50cl, finally got time to review this. Pours an abundant off white dense head, amber to brown deep cloudy colour, golden reflex. Very nice bready, caramel, crystal malts, very light toasted, fruity esters and yeasty multigrain smell; and wow, that’s complex. Tastes malts at their best, nice fruit/dried fruits, caramel, apple, yeasty, sweet spiced finish; right medium sweetness never overdone, light tartness. (a strüdel in a glass...).Medium to full creamy body, almost lively carbonation but softer than most hefeweizen. Between the top wheat beers and one of my favs, probably the best Ayinger

Very hazy brown color with great wet foam. Ripe bananas, spices, maybe cinnamon. It has that little special something in the aroma. Taste is not as interesting, but very solid. The banana blends in perfectly with the yeasts. The kick which the Bräuweisse has in the finish is not there, but the finish is very pleasant. Refreshing and smooth. Super Dunkelweizen.
