sweet biscuity aroma, orangy-brown hazy colour. sweet bananaish flavour. a little thin, but still a good beer.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 djd07 (1407) - Houston, Texas, USA - APR 9, 2009
Bottle as shown. Pours a hazy copper golden with a large frothy white head that diminshes quickly. A lot of carbonation and good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is banana wheat and yeast. Easy to drink with a fruity taste with banana and light clove. A good dunkel from Ayinger.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Stine (1398) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - FEB 4, 2007
Muddy golden in color. Aromas are oranges, wheaty spice and the classic cloves and bananas. The flavor is much the same with some hints of darker fruits and pepper, finishing quite cleanly. I expected a slightly denser offering, but this was a good crisp refresher.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 carruthm (1396) - Seattle, Washington, USA - JUL 2, 2008
Very good dunkel weisse with enough added darkness to make it easily a dunkel but also retaining the aspects of a light weizen all with the trademark ayinger greatness.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Reid (1385) - Salem,Oregon, Oregon, USA - NOV 15, 2003
Ok first this is my first Dunkle -Weizen..so here goes.
Comes in the usual attractive Ayinger brown euro-style..500ml bottle..nice simple label and again the beautiful cap.
Well this is certainlly much darker beir than the usual Hefe-Weissen..a sort of dark murky gold..with a nice big white frothy, bubbly head.
mm same wonderful aroma of all the good German hefes( something that very few American versions can get)..the spicy esters..banana, clove..backed by that sour wheat aroma wonderful.
This beer has a good wheat profile in the taste and the banana flavour comes through strong in the after taste..nice.
Very pleasant sensation on the tongue!
A most drinkable dunkle..very very nice will try more of this style.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Doppelganger (1383) - Dry County, Arkansas, USA - MAR 16, 2005
UPDATED: JUN 26, 2009 Walking around John’s Grocery, and there was the line of Ayinger beers calling out to me. There are so many I haven’t tried, I figured I could just pick one and probably it would be a rate. Nope. Realized as I was adding this I had had it before. Oh well. This was clearly a fresher example, so it’s nice to be able to bump my rating up a few points.
Hazy orange, generous layer of lasting off-white head. Spicy hay nose, apples, warm rustic bread and a hint of butter in the background. Mint and apple flavor, yeasty baguette, sweet menthol finish. Soft and full, good depth and complexity. A beer very happy like this on its own, but one that suggests a myriad of possibilities paired with food.
(Previous rating, 3/16/2005. Pours light copper with a big head of light tan foam that fades quickly. Lemon, carmel, mild roast aromas, with a subtle spiciness. More sour lemon in the flavor, with hard-candy carmel. Soft, mouthfilling. Completely lacking the nice sparkly-bite I sort of expect with a weiss. This seems like well-crafted beer...just not all that interesting. Have I toasted my tastebuds with IPAs? No...I don’t think so. I think this is just a little bit boring. 6/3/6/3 14)
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 LaChad (1375) - San Francisco, California, USA - JUL 4, 2002
Quite generous and nice looking head. It would be cool to do a seven-minute pour with this stuff, you could probably get the head like 6 inches above the glass! A bit lighter in color than most dunkles. Dry wheatiness in the aroma, immensely smooth mouthfeel with some well-balanced maltiness. Hints of complex fruitiness throughout, perhaps apples, pears, slight cloves, and maybe a hint of chocolate. Quite excellent!

Big, foamy head. Beautiful unfiltered deep amber appearance. Malted, spicy aroma. Smooth on the palate - wheat, fruit, spices, yeast. So good!
