COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Ayinger Ur-Weisse is an old-fashioned wheat with some fine roasted malt to give it more color and flavor than golden hefe- weisse. It has an immense crown of lovely foam held proudly above a robe of translucent amber. On the palate, malt and yeast predominate, with a delicious balance of fruit and bread-like yeast. The taste is complex, with suggestions of soft fruit, apple, and, in the finish, perhaps, even cloves.

Pours medium amber with a solid head, which also subdues the aroma. Otherwise a very nice Weizen with a sweet but not oppressive flavour and well-balanced bitterness.

From a 500 ml bottle this poured a nice dark orange with light orange head they lasted seemingly forever. Big lacing rings. Nose of banana and yeas, with some spices. Clean and rich mouthfeel. Flavor are bananas and yeast again. Very nice to drink.

Bottle 0.5 L. Dark, golden, cloudy body, with large, creamy, white head, mostly lasting with a good lacing; high density of tiny bubbles. Very intense banana aroma with some spicy and malty character; some hoppy notes (lemon) are also present. Intense sweet flavour with moderate acidic notes, particularly in the finish. Medium body with a creamy texture; lively carbonation; some astringency in the finish. Very good beer.

Bottle. Complex aroma - hints of peach, clove and cinnamon. Medium tan slightly cloudy with moderate head. Clove flavor up front with banana and orange toward the finish. A good beer but closer to a Hefe.

UPDATED: JUN 26, 2009 Walking around John’s Grocery, and there was the line of Ayinger beers calling out to me. There are so many I haven’t tried, I figured I could just pick one and probably it would be a rate. Nope. Realized as I was adding this I had had it before. Oh well. This was clearly a fresher example, so it’s nice to be able to bump my rating up a few points. Hazy orange, generous layer of lasting off-white head. Spicy hay nose, apples, warm rustic bread and a hint of butter in the background. Mint and apple flavor, yeasty baguette, sweet menthol finish. Soft and full, good depth and complexity. A beer very happy like this on its own, but one that suggests a myriad of possibilities paired with food. (Previous rating, 3/16/2005. Pours light copper with a big head of light tan foam that fades quickly. Lemon, carmel, mild roast aromas, with a subtle spiciness. More sour lemon in the flavor, with hard-candy carmel. Soft, mouthfilling. Completely lacking the nice sparkly-bite I sort of expect with a weiss. This seems like well-crafted beer...just not all that interesting. Have I toasted my tastebuds with IPAs? No...I don’t think so. I think this is just a little bit boring. 6/3/6/3 14)

Bottle from Healthy Spirits. Pours cloudy copper with a nice white head and a toffee aroma. Thre is a bready flavor with apple and some spices and a large yeast presence. This is a hearty brew.

I was surprised this poured rather clear. However it still looked very nice. I smelled quite a bit of banana, along with some bread, and spices. Tasted a bit nuttier at first, but then I start noticing the fruit qualities. Finishes fairly apple-y, but there’s still a pleasant nuttiness to this. This beer made my mouth pucker a bit. Very good, well-balanced flavors, but a little thin feeling.
