Commercial Description:
The recipe for this beer goes right back to monastery traditions. The complex triple mash process using four types of malt gives the dark “doppelbock” its characteristic malty dominance and its close to black color. The storage time of 16 weeks produces a pronounced, well-rounded taste. Despite a high original wort content, the sweetness that is frequently present with doppelbocks can scarcely be detected. The first taste is of mild fullness with an accompanying coffee tone, which becomes more dominant with the aftertaste. Between November and January you can allow yourself to be completely won over by the excellent quality of the Winterbock.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours very dark burgundy, but clear, with a light brown head. Lots of flavour, licorice, chcolate and dark fruits. Smooth and well balanced.

On tap at Ayingers Speis und Trank - Munich. Clear red-brown body with off-white head. Aroma is malty, and a little burnt, with loads of caramel and rock candy. The flavour is sweet and malty with strong notes of caramel, rock candy, and hints of prunes and alcohol. Very drinkable.

Bottle. Deep brown, almost black. Large brownish head that disappeared rather quickly. Nice aroma of malt, caramel, dark bread, brown sugar and some coffee. Sweet taste but not too sweet. Malt, raisin, dried fruit. Medium body with a rather stycky feeling. Very pleasant to drink. Aftertaste was dry with some nice bitterness.

Bottle. Deep reddish brown with a small tanned head that dissipates quickly and barely leaves any lacings. The aroma is filled with layers of malts - sweet caramel, toffee, milk chocolate and rye bread - and a decently integrated layer of German style leafy and herbal hops. The smell makes me think "German Scotch Ale), but with the taste, we’re back in bock-country. It’s stil very malty, but more bready and toasty rather than caramel-like. Not too sweet flavor actually. Some notes of toffee though. Some leafy hops that get accentuated in the finish which is mildly bitter with some herbal notes, gentle spicy hops and stale bread. The body is somewhere around medium, quite a lot of carbonation and actually semi-dry in the finish. A good beer. The flavor is not as complex and layered as the smell, which is a bit of a letdown.

Very dark brown color, large head disappearing quickly; aroma of roasted malt, raisins and also tart lingonberries; mouthfeel is quite carbonated, could be thicker; flavor of mild bitterness, but mostly sweet, roasted malt and coffee-like dryness; finish is also rather dry and slightly bitter.

500 ml bottle. Deep dark ruby brown colour, thin light brown head. Sweetish roasted malty aroma, with some liquorice and dark fruits. The flavour is also roasted, malty, bread-like, with a hint of coffee and a warm bitter finish. Full-bodied, smooth carbonation.
