Commercial Description: An American "steam" style lager. Steam beers originated on the west coast when Americans first began their westward expansion. Brewers tried making lagers that had recently become quite popular and were brewed extensively in the Midwest. However, due to the warm temperatures on the west coast and no refrigeration, these beers had to ferment at warmer temperatures. The higher temperatures caused more carbonation in the casks and when they were tapped, made a loud hissing noise. This is where the term steam came from. This style had disappeared until Anchor Brewing Co. revived it in the 1970's, and they subsequently trademarked the term "steam", so these beers are usually referred to as California Commons. Our version fits the style well with its medium body and slight citrus hop flavor.
