3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 drewbeerme (3645) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 2, 2012Bottle. Pours blood red no head. Aroma is earthy pepper, figs, cherry pits. Cinnamon. Flavors are strong chipotle, cherry pits and juice, muddy chocolate, tart finish. I enjoy the chipotle and cherry but the chocolate doesn’t add much.

Bottle at the Colorado Mead Tasting ’12. Pour is deep purple/crimson with no head. Really dirty/earthy aroma, roasted chilies, a hint of smoke, dark fruits, and mint. Sweet cherries upfront, with touches of oak and cocoa through the middle, with some big heat on the backend. Syrupy mouthfeel with no carbonation. Really different mead and hard to pinpoint what I like/dislike. This one is open to debate.

Colorado mead tasting 2012 - turbid purplish red - aroma of cherry, a touch of dry cocoa, a hint of smoke, light spice - some light vegetal character from the peppers, but it is easy to ignore - hard to evaluate if this is good or bad - flavor is sweet cherries up front, followed by some tartness/acidity - the chipotles come on strong through the middle and finish - smoke, moderate heat - cocoa in the finish, but the heat overpowers it - I love heat, though, so I can’t complain - I dig it, to an extent, but it is a bit messy.

Pour out of 375 mL bottle, thanks Stephen! Dark reddish purple/brown pour with no head, aroma brought notes of rotten mint, some slight cherry, chili notes, some vegetal as well, hints of earth, slight chocolate but restrained, but the rotten basil/herbal note is tough to get past. Taste is a mix of cherry, chocolate, some cherry, hints of rotten mint, hints of earth, finishing very spicy. This is very weird.

2012 Colorado Mead Tasting at Armin’s house. Thanks to Stephen! Pours a clear, reddish violet appearance with no head. Smoky, peppery spicy, cherry, dark chocolate, kind of strange aroma. Very strange, rich cherry flavor that morphs into a weird pepper, veggie flavor. There’s some chocolate, cocoa, earth, and honey mixed in. Kind of an enigma and I still don’t know if I like it or not.

Bottle from Allen split with some brahs in the yunk. Limited to 40 bottles, this guy has been on my mead radar as a must try. Thanks for sharing dude. Pours cranberry red with bubbly clearish head, light lacing left behind. Nose is cinnamon, pepper, light cocoa, black cherry. Taste is chipotle, red hot candy, goji berries, and some light chocolate. Rich and spicy with a residual heat left in the throat in upper chest. Finishes dry and long lasting with flavor. World class mead especially if you like heat.

Bottle at a tasting at James’ place, thanks to Steve. Pours a deep crimson and ruby. Smoky chipotles, like a freshly opened can of them in adobo sauce. Medium bodied, cherry comes in quickly, a hint of cocoa, lots of warmth, more cherry comes back. Really nice, complicated but approachable. Long cherry pie, touches of smoky chipotle. Delicious.
