Ethiopian Harrar coffee is one of the oldest coffee beans still produced and is known for its distinctive fruity, wine flavor. To make this mead we cold-soaked 6 lbs of it for 48 hours to extract as much of the wonderful flavor and aroma as possible. Roastmaster and all-around coffee nut, Frank Lanzkron-Tamarazo (owner of Chazzano), provided his consultation for this first collaboration between the two Ferndale, MI companies. The coffee was selected to pair perfectly with the earthy Michigan wildflower honey. Serve at cellar temperature.

Pour out of 375 mL clear red pour with no head, aroma brought notes of big coffee, coffee grounds, hints of vanilla, roast, hints of more roast, some more coffee. Taste is a mix of sweet creamer, coffee, hints of coffee grounds, slight caramel, toffee, finishing fairly sweet.

From notes. Enjoyed on September 19 at Travisí house. Poured from a 375 mL bottle. The pour is a darker reddish orange color with no head or lace to be found. The aroma is really hot on the front end, and then it morphs into detectable things. There is a nice honey sweetness that couples with a lighter than expected coffee. There is a little roast hidden in there as well, but the honey sweetness is the forefront. The flavor is much of the same. The coffee does not taste as good as it smells. There is a burnt roast here that drowns out the honey a bit before the booze takes over and remains pretty warm on the finish. It does come off syrupy in the mouth feel, but Iím not sure how a coffee mead should hold up. It seems like itís a different thing for me. There is almost no carbonation, and the aftertaste is lingeringly sweet, backed up by a burnt coffee and a lingering booze.. It wasnít terrible.

Bottle. The pour is a reddish orange. The aroma is honey and bitter coffee. The taste is a nice mix of honey and coffee, but the coffee is not overpowering. Has some heat to it as well. Good mead. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Clear reddish-brown pour, still. Aroma is a mix of ashy, burnt coffee and earthy honey. Tastes really bad. Old burnt coffee and very sweet honey doesnít make a good combo. I know this bottle is at least a couple years old now so maybe itís aged poorly. Itís barely drinkable right now.

375 ml bottle courtesy of brad. Pours a translucent brown. Nose of coffe and fruit. Taste follows with a honey finish. Coffee has held up fairly well over time, but some of the acidity has faded.
