Many years ago, a mysterious book was discovered by a group of friends in a Ferndale, MI basement. A translation of its contents revealed the recipe for an ancient beverage using mango juice, honey, and black pepper. What they didn’t realize was that creating the beverage had dire consequences. Stricken by fear after its compleation, the friends tried to contain the terrifying forces into this very bottle. Once opened, however, no one can say for sure if it can be conquered. Clear yellow-gold pour with a small, fizzy head, that fades quickly but is sustained somewhat by high effervescence. Aroma is mostly pepper, but there’s some definite mango sweetness and a hint of earth. Flavor is a little fruitier, mango up front, then sweet, fruity honey, then nice peppercorn, toast, a little stone fruit and increasing mango presence toward the finish. Light to medium body, juicy slightly sweet throughout, with a light, but blanketing and slightly sharp carbonation. Good stuff overall, I like the flavorings, but it could use a little more honey character.

Pours pale, bubbly straw yellow. Sharp aroma has fruity and honey notes, inviting a taste. Flavor is definitely different and refreshing - honey that is not overly sweet, mango, a bit of sour apple. Texture has, well, I suppose average viscosity and a subtle but lasting fizz. After the mead has headed downstairs, your mouth is still a-buzzin’. Black pepper peeps out in the finish. I definitely should try some more meads - only problem is they do tend to be rather spendy.

(Draught at Bishop’s Arms Folkungagatan, Stockholm, 24 Jan 2015) Pale yellow colour with frothy, white head. Fruity nose with notes of honey, birch leaves, spruce needles and mango. Fruity taste with honey, birch leaves, grass, mango, birch sap and a black-pepper touch that is fairly well hidden, but turns up as a certain heat after a while. Medium body, with a well balanced sweetness. Interesting and tasty. Quite nice.

Definitely a weird one. The mango is definitely there but the pepper is a bit too much for my tastes. Aside from that it never really came together for me. Not a bad mead by any means, just not my cup of tea.

Incredibly floral aroma, like honeysuckle with hints of rose, with tropical fruit, citrus, and muscat grapes here and there. I really don’t smell pepper, which is why I was fairly unready for the strength of it in the flavor. Or, especially the mouthfeel, where the heat and bitter harshness builds as I drink. Would have loved to see this one with the pepper elsewhere and replaced by a little finishing acidity to sharpen. Beautiful fruit, peachy, with more tropical and citrus. Would favor well against many dessert wines in this respect, but as it is I cannot get by the harsh and mouth-dominating black pepper.

500ml bottle from Mikkeller webshop. Clear pale yellow, no head and aroma of sweet mango & melon, flowery, incense & honey, black pepper. Taste is juicy mango, bubblegum, fruity, floral, honey, spice and lingering pepper. Slightly oily mouthfeel, light bodied, low carbonation, crisp peppery warming finish. Interesting, nicely drinkable.
