Many years ago, a mysterious book was discovered by a group of friends in a Ferndale, MI basement. A translation of its contents revealed the recipe for an ancient beverage using mango juice, honey, and black pepper. What they didn’t realize was that creating the beverage had dire consequences. Stricken by fear after its compleation, the friends tried to contain the terrifying forces into this very bottle. Once opened, however, no one can say for sure if it can be conquered. Bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop. Pours clear pale straw gold with a light frizzante carbonation. Nose shows honey, light mango and pepper, with notes of young wood and tart wild apples. An odd but not bad herbal note. The parts come together in a unique whole. Taste starts sweet but ends quite dry, especially for the style.

Definitely a weird one. The mango is definitely there but the pepper is a bit too much for my tastes. Aside from that it never really came together for me. Not a bad mead by any means, just not my cup of tea.

Incredibly floral aroma, like honeysuckle with hints of rose, with tropical fruit, citrus, and muscat grapes here and there. I really don’t smell pepper, which is why I was fairly unready for the strength of it in the flavor. Or, especially the mouthfeel, where the heat and bitter harshness builds as I drink. Would have loved to see this one with the pepper elsewhere and replaced by a little finishing acidity to sharpen. Beautiful fruit, peachy, with more tropical and citrus. Would favor well against many dessert wines in this respect, but as it is I cannot get by the harsh and mouth-dominating black pepper.

500ml bottle from Mikkeller webshop. Clear pale yellow, no head and aroma of sweet mango & melon, flowery, incense & honey, black pepper. Taste is juicy mango, bubblegum, fruity, floral, honey, spice and lingering pepper. Slightly oily mouthfeel, light bodied, low carbonation, crisp peppery warming finish. Interesting, nicely drinkable.

The mango is nicely front and center when cold. As it warms the pepper is all over the tongue. I was sitting here trying to figure out what I ate that was spicey. Its the mead!! The front is crisp and semidry. The finish is dry and peppery, peppery, peppery. I am seriously enamored with this beverage.

Smells like a dessert apple wine. I get some pepper in there too, and the tropical flavors show in the taste. Very light color and body is light overall too. A nice mead and I like what B Nektar does overall, so more please!

Keg at CPK 5th B-day celebrations, London. It pours a hazy rich straw/golden color with no head to speak of. Aroma is sweet and peppery, with notes of melon, mango, honey, black pepper. Taste is sweet and lightly crispy and spicy, with big notes of ripe melon and mango, black pepper, honey. Sticky juicy mouthfell with soft carbonation. Overall, a sweet monster but a good one at that
