Bottle conditioned. Black with a large beige head. Aromas are dry roast malts, lots of earthiness. Flavours are very dry roast malts with coffee and hints of bitter dark chocolate. Some licourice, too. Has a very hoppy bitter finish finish with a dry aftertaste. A proper dry stout.

Cask Conditioned, Gravity poured at Banbury Beer Festival ’05. Black beer with red hint and malty head. Dry, roasted smokey flavoured stout, coffee husks and roasted chocolate malt. Bitter lasting finish, good stuff.

[Bottle conditioned] A black beer with a chocolate brown head. The aroma is sour - weird for a stout, more like a Flemmish sour ale. The flavor is also sour like Flemmish sour ale but with notes of chocolate and caramel.

Bottle. Black with bubbly, light brown head. Quite sour, flemish sour ale-like; "it’s wine!". Something has gone wrong here for sure, though, oddly, it manages to be somewhat balanced and drinkable... Or was it just me getting tipsy? Deserves a re-rate. And again; Thanks a lot Jens Ungstrup.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Although this is described as a stout, I thought it more like a porter. The mouthfeel seemed a little thin for a stout and there was distinct woody character and some sourness on the finish. There are subtle hints of chocolate ad coffee too. Not bad. Cask (gravity dispense), Ipswich Beer Festival.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: APR 1, 2011 Rerate, cask at the Number Twenty-2, Darlington. Black colour, creamy tan head. Moderate but nice roasty aroma, hints of coffee and chocolate. Smooth mouthfeel. Roasty flavour, notes of coffee, distinctly bitter finish. I’m upping it a bit. Original rating: Cask at the Ipswich Beer Festival 2004, gravity dispense. Black (and I mean BLACK) colour, even when held to the light. Aroma has some dark chocolate, coffee and wood. Roast malt flavour. Hints of tar in the finish. Dry, woody aftertaste. This is not a stout of the "smooth and velvety" kind, but an interesting aquaintance indeed!
