Wow! I thought this was one of the best beers Iíve had rescently. It looks great, pretty much pitch black, with a small amount of brown, creamy head. A really nice, burnt aroma as well as some chocolatey hints. A great coffee taste thatís really quite powerful followed by very burnt malts and then a bitter dark chocolate taste on the after. The after-taste stuck with me for hours! Amazing beer!

Cask @ March Hare, Dunton. Colour of pure black. Smells like malt roasted into oblivion. Taste is bittersweet with a dry finish. Simple but absolutely gorgeous. Worth living in Bedfordshire for this beer.

JDW, Wanstead. Lovely drop. Packed with juicy, fresh, quality blackcurrant fruit. Chocolate. Roasty. Beautiful. It all flows together so well. Great - awesome - mouthfeel. Harmony. Great transition from front to finish. So wonderful it brings tears to the eyes.

Cask gravity at Planet Thanet BF 2007. Had this in error as the guy behind the counter poured me the wrong beer, but even so this had plenty of malt to keep it going. Very roasted malts, bit powdery in mouth, intense flavours, some dark fruit. Powdery, dry finish.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2008 Cask, Far From The Madding Crowd. Brown highlighted black, dense tawny brown head. Lovely, bottomless depth of soft caramel and milk chocolate; buttery, but very complimentary here. Flavor is much less sweet than the aroma would indicate. A far more restrained caramel flavor, earthy coffee, and sour dark chocolate. Silky on the palate. A lovely, welcoming beer. (Re-rate: Not going to kill my previous rating, but just had this again at FFTMC, and what a completely different experience. Nose was smoke, bananas, bubblegum and instant coffee. Smoke and brown bread flavor with more bananas. Not much depth or interest. 6/3/5/2 11. Wonder if the recipe has changed or this was just an old cask?) (One more rating update here as of 15/5/08: Again at FFTMC. Got to comment on just how amazing the mouthfeel of this is for a 4.5% beer. Bass P2, at 8%, had less sliky fullness than this little beauty.)

Cask. Very close to black colour with small brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, some dark dry fruits, mild toffee and caramel malts. Flavour is liquorice, roasted malts, some fruits and wooden notes as well. Rather pleasant and quite complex for being 4.5%.

UPDATED: APR 1, 2011 Rerate, cask at the Number Twenty-2, Darlington. Black colour, creamy tan head. Moderate but nice roasty aroma, hints of coffee and chocolate. Smooth mouthfeel. Roasty flavour, notes of coffee, distinctly bitter finish. Iím upping it a bit. Original rating: Cask at the Ipswich Beer Festival 2004, gravity dispense. Black (and I mean BLACK) colour, even when held to the light. Aroma has some dark chocolate, coffee and wood. Roast malt flavour. Hints of tar in the finish. Dry, woody aftertaste. This is not a stout of the "smooth and velvety" kind, but an interesting aquaintance indeed!

UPDATED: SEP 27, 2009 Cask conditioned - handpump - Malt Shovel Northampton. A black stout with an off-white head and lace. The aroma is slightly sweet and there are hoppy notes also. The taste is lovely. Dry and roasty. Very full bodied and long in the finish. An excellent, very tasty stout.Score 4.0

Cask at GBBF, Day 4. Pours brown-black with a foamy, tan head. Dry, cocoa malt aroma with hints of lactic sugar. Medium sweet flavor, milk chocolate, some lacto, mild roast. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish, hints of scorched earth, ash and tobacco. Nice.
