[Pint, J.D.W. Cuthbert Brodrick - Leeds, 07/01/10] Mild coffee maltiness on the nose. Dark fruit and coffee roasted malt flavour. Body could do with being a touch thicker. Bitter finish. I thought this was a porter when drinking it.

Cask at The Square Peg, Birmingham; dark brown, thick creamy off white head; aroma is roast malt and liquourice; taste is roast malt, soft dark chocolate, liquorice and hint of dark fruit; dry, slightly bitter finish; defiantly old school goodness, and on a personal note evocative of many a quality evening in the Lord Rodney’s Head, Whitechapel in the mid 90s.

Cask at The Green Dragon, Leek (JDW) Clear dark brown colour with a thin off white head. Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruits and caramel. Taste of roasted malt and coffee, plus dark fruits like raisin, prune and a little smokiness. Light bodied and soft carbonation. A dry, roasted finish. Not bad.

Cask at JDW. Dark red brown, hazy, still, big brown head. Aroma is toffee-ish. Body is medium, touch of carbonation, smooth. Taste is light and sweet, a little ash, breathy malt, no real bitterness. Comes across as a mild, a touch watery.

Cask pint in The Shrewsbury Hotel, a Wetherspoons, on 26th Jan 2015. Dark body, deep ruby hue to the almost black brew, on top a tanned crown. Malty and sweet from the start, dark berries in the taste along with molasses. Decent.

Cask at the white lady jdw. Pours see through dark brown, off-white creamy head. Aromas of light chocolate and spice. Taste is light sweet, rich mouthfeel. Sweet nutella chocolatey finish.

Cask at JDW Square Peg; opaque dark brown pour with a thin bubbly light tan head, toasted malt aroma, taste definitely has caramel, some toast, dried dark fruit, ok.

On cask at the Standing Order. Appearance - close to opaque black but with some red chinks. Nice head. Nose - dry malt and just a hint of burnt raisins. Taste - the raisins are more forward. Bready backbone. Palate - medium bodied with a dry yet creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - decent beer if slightly gnarly.
