2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
label was with a black area inisde the oval, not red as the picture.
back label stated
breznak dark beer 3.8%
drinks union a.s.
(unlike 3.7% here, and some people mentioning schwarzbier).
not sure the rating is put at the right beer. also this one states BAL 9.7 (instead of Pivo 10)
best before 2007-08-28
so a 3.8% beer tasted a whole year after its best before date. (supermarket still sold it, and i didn’t check dates bf buying)
aroma :cardboard? yeast? not very strong, not bad, just strange. also a little sourness and
som quite faint acidity 4/10
looks : clear dark, dark brown/red, vanilla flavored head. looks great
flavor : caramel, roasted stuff, water. aftertaste moves on to charchcoal, burnt grill, perhaps
even burnt cardboard (but not burnt plastic). sort of like a watery porter without the
chocolate, and without the alcohol, and only a little coffee. Not bad for a 3.6% alc. beer.
impressed that i don’t get aged beer flavor now that it’s more than a year too old.
palate : okay, things considered.
overall : i had expected to drain this one as it was so low alc and so old, but it was
defiently drinkable so thumbs up bigtime. who knows, aging a year more might’ve made it better.
it is of course a little watery given the low alc, and i might think they’ve overdone the
charchcoal flavor, but in general a nice brew. not fantastic, but a nice low alc brew.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Beige, huge dense head over dark mahogany beer. Roasted, but fresh malt, dry black roasted barley, smoked sausage en bread aromas. Sweet, with a definite Pumpernickel flavour. Actually nice. Sweet, in a bready, not excessive way. Malt & dark malts. Light but nowhere empty, grist slickness. Light and actually great in its style!
Earlier Rating: 7/16/2004 Total Score: 3.8
(My bottle, for German export, expressly calls this a Schwarzbier. I did not reclassify it, as it certainly fits the Dunkel style at least as well as the Schwarzbier one)
Very dark brown to black, with ruby shine anyway; foxy-brown good head, collapsing fast. Outspoken (sweet) coffee-moccha notes, going over into caramel and dark waxy leaves’ aromas. Coffee, cigarette-ash flavours, rather bitterish at first, then mellowing by woody-brown sugar flavour. Dry-ish, soft creamy texture. Very tasty brew. Rather sweet at length, but immensely drinkable and satisfying, nothing too far out. A perfect example that a good beer doesn’t need to be a huge monster by hops, malt, alcohol...

(Bottle) Pours dark brown. The aroma is malty up front with tones of sour dark bread and some caramel alongside some yeasty notes. Subtle hops in the background with tones of grass and maybe some herbs. The flavour is malty sweet with some sour hints and light bitter, grass like hops. The mouthfeel is soft and light crisp. Near medium bodied.

(Bottle, 3.8%) Pours the deepest reddish brown ever. Light roasted aroma with tones of dry coffee and some chocolate. The malt also bring some caramel and dark bread syrup. Oily, woody and peppery hops in the background. Also some liquorice, sugar and earth. Tiny hints of smoke. Medium to heavy sweet flavour with some grassy hop tones. Sugar, earth, sweet liquorice, chocolate and dark bread in the undertones flavour wise. Light dry finish with some coffee. Light bitter. Light to medium body. A bit too sweet overall.
