4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
The BAB 401 I tasted last week here at Cambrinus was way better than the one I tasted from draught at the Second Bruges Beer Festival.
I’m very well surprised with this bottled BAB 401. excellent brewing by Marc Strubbe. And... a great choice from the BAB people!
BAB 401 has become a delicious 8.0 vol% hoppy Tripel. 3 Kinds of different hop varieties were used, which gave the beer that pleasant flowery, hoppy bitter, experience.
Folks, this is a tripel like it should taste. Crispy, hoppy, somewhat sweetish, not too dry, full bodied, pleasant soft without too much carbonation tingling.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Strong Belgian blonde for the BAB (Brugse Autonome Bierproevers) but equally referring to the long-gone Brouwerij Aigle Belgica, once the largest Belgian brewery. Loosely structured but thick, snow white foam, colour a ’dirty’ golden blonde; aroma of peaches, caramel, leafy hops, bitter honey, rosewater; taste begins with a soft peachy fruitiness, then evolving to a sweetish pale maltiness, supple, finishing grassy and leafy hoppy, mildly bitter with a bit of warming, gin-like alcohol. Bit thin for a triple, more an ’edelbier’ in the style of Duvel and its offspring.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle @ Cambrinus, Brugge. Pours hazy golden with a creamy head. Yeast, dust, citrus and pine. A bottle from 2011 where the hops have vanished. Hmmh.. BB 2016.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
White yellowish color, misty, hazy, white head, very light.
Subtile nose, yeast, malt, hops, hint of fruits on the back.
Some CO2, sparkling bitterness, refreshing, again some delicate fruitiness. This is the best way to describe this beer, delicate. Subtile in nose and taste, not breaking out, very well thought. very nice

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Draft @ Brugs Bierfestival. Pours a clear golden coloured beer with a decent, two finger of head. Aroma is spicey, light alcoholic and carries some malts with it. Flavour is medium bitter and misses the flavours that I’m used to in a tripel. Decent as a beer, not so good as a tripel.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Another beer I reviewed while in The Red Rose, Brugge during 2011. Although this isn’t a Trappist beer the bars motto/logo ‘Trappist beer, taste the silence@ Rose Red’ certainly is true: this is a lovely place to review a few beers in.
Initially brewed for the ‘Brugse Autonome Bierproevers’, not sure what the 401 is about though? It was so popular it has become a regularly brewed beer and is available in other parts of Belgium now, not just in Brugge.
Slight haze to the yellow body and only a small white head sits on top of brew.
The smell is a typical Belgian Abbey Tripel blend of yeasts, hops and light malts.
The taste is also fairly typical, hop front with fruity hints and a mild malt content to prevent the beer appearing too sour or tart.
Like so many Belgian brews, this is so easy to drink, you have to check the alcohol levels to make sure you aren’t going to fall over after a mini-session of three beers or so.

Sampled @ 5de Brugs Bierfestival, Brugge. This was my last beer on the festival, and after having a selection of very good beers this was a bit of a down note to end on. Not by any means a bad beer, just ... ordinary, compared to the competition.
