COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Info: www.babbierproevers.be.

Draught at Brugse Beertje. Yellow, large fluffy head with poor retention, great lacing. Aroma of light pepper, licorice, malt. Taste is malty and light. Average.

Another beer I reviewed while in The Red Rose, Brugge during 2011. Although this isn’t a Trappist beer the bars motto/logo ‘Trappist beer, taste the silence@ Rose Red’ certainly is true: this is a lovely place to review a few beers in. Initially brewed for the ‘Brugse Autonome Bierproevers’, not sure what the 401 is about though? It was so popular it has become a regularly brewed beer and is available in other parts of Belgium now, not just in Brugge. Slight haze to the yellow body and only a small white head sits on top of brew. The smell is a typical Belgian Abbey Tripel blend of yeasts, hops and light malts. The taste is also fairly typical, hop front with fruity hints and a mild malt content to prevent the beer appearing too sour or tart. Like so many Belgian brews, this is so easy to drink, you have to check the alcohol levels to make sure you aren’t going to fall over after a mini-session of three beers or so.

Sampled @ 5de Brugs Bierfestival, Brugge. This was my last beer on the festival, and after having a selection of very good beers this was a bit of a down note to end on. Not by any means a bad beer, just ... ordinary, compared to the competition.

Draft at ’t Brugs Beertje. Nice presentation, with the clear blond color and semilarge white head. But I do not like the logo. Sour aroma. Sweet and fruity flavor at the start, bitter and spicy finish.

Bright blond colour. Aroma is a bit of sour yeast. This comes through in the flavour too. Texture is quite smooth but feels a bit too watery. Aftertaste is slightly medicinal.

draft sample @ 5de Brugs Bier festival. Dorée, col blanc épais. I guess a warming palate when you are drinking this outside and it’s -12°c. Houblon et malt amer restant dans une lignée typique belge. Ça se laisse boire, mais sans plus. Pour moi, le profile avait un côté diacetyl assez industriel pour un fini amer houblonné et malt.

Dark yellow coloured and hazy. Has a white head, creamy and fully lasting. Aroma of straw, hay, faint yeasty, light bread. Flavor starts light sweet and finish heavy bitter. Dry texture and soft to flat carbonation. Lightly astringent.
