2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 womencantsail (6860) - Garbage Grove, California, USA - MAY 31, 2011
A: The beer pours a very dark brown with a rather creamy tan head.
S: Starts off a little buttery, but that seems to diminish with time. Moderate roastiness with some nice toasted malt and an earthy and floral hop profile. A little bit of bread and toffee sweetness.
T: The flavor also shows some butter. Sweet with a big creamy caramel flavor. Some roast, but not all that intense. A mild bitterness to go along with some light earthy hop notes.
M: Light to medium in body with a medium level of carbonation.
O: One of the least awful beers at Babe’s, but that’s not saying much.

Part of the tasting platter at Babe’s BBQ & Brewhouse in Rancho Mirage. Now called "Blackfin Lager" with an ABV of 4.8%. Deep clear mahogany. Burnt malt entry, followed by a surprising fruity sweetness (cooked berries). Finish is dry with low bitterness. Very nice.

I had a pint of this on draft. They call it "Blackfin Lager" and list it now at 4.8%. This is a Very Good Schwarzbier. Great nose of smoke & roasted grain, this was great w/ BBQ
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BeerLimey (2154) - California, USA - JUN 8, 2002
Probably the best of Babe’s current line up and a brew that takes a little time to develop its full character. Profound chocolatey and roasted coffee cream flavors, with a thick smooth palate that might fool some into thinking that this is an ale.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 savnac (2056) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - FEB 3, 2012
On tap @ Babe’s. Dark brown with a small, dense off white head. Aroma of rich, dark, bready malt, with some coffee and chocolate. Flavor is more dark, bread and some dry cocoa with a light hop bitterness. Medium body with average carbonation and a dry, clean finish. I really like this, lots of malt flavor but not sweet at all, goes down very smooth.

Well, I’m guessing this is their schartzbier I had. It was called the Blackfin Lager. Tap at the brewpub... black body with a rich creamy roasted caramel aroma with lesser notes of chocolate and coffee. Very smooth and drinkable. After a long hike this hit the spot.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Naven (1000) - Poway, California, USA - APR 12, 2009
Growler that my brother brought over. I had this about a year ago and enjoyed it - and am enjoying it again today. I haven’t had that many schwarzbiers, but this was as good as any that I have had. Malt and smoke are present, but don’t overkill the base beer, which is a nice flavorful lager. If you’re ever in Rancho Mirage/Palm Springs, stop at Babes for some good BBQ and beer.

On tap at Babes Bar-B-Que Grill & Brewhouse 1/8/10. Now marketed as Blackfin Lager. Pours a dark brown with moderate tan head. Aroma is biscut malt and caramel. Flavor is very sweet and not smoky for a supposed schwarzbier. Lots of caramel and toffee flavors and just a hint of light coffee malt.
