It is on this beer that the kriek and framboise is based, a premium fruit beer for which Belgium is well known. Hand wrapped and presented in half champagne bottles. This is a remarkable beer.

Bottle thanks to Gibson. Pours a dark brown with medium off white head that lasts. The aroma is berry jam, funk, oak. Thick, jammy, nice tartness, low acidity, good.

Restrained cherry candy aroma in a red tinted black pour. Lovely balance between the tart and the sweet makes this an excellent example of the style (and shows why the Belgians are considered the masters).

Butelka. Miedziano czerwony kolor, spora piana koloru écru. Aromat słodkich malin, wręcz dżemu. Smak słodki, lekko kwaśny i wytrawny. W smaku maliny, trochę wiśni. Piwo jest dosyć płytkie, jednostajne, z męcząca słodyczą. Raczej do ominięcia.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2016 375ml bottle, nicely wrapped and presented. Pours a clear deep red-brown colour, with a small rapidly disappearing pinkish head. Aroma is sweet and of real raspberries. Likewise the taste is also sweet raspberries, some malt, light sourness, with an acidic tart finish. Not too sweet either. Really nice.

Appearance: clear amber-brown with one fat finger of dense and fluffy light purple head, excellent retention and lacing. (5/5) Aroma: sweet tart raspberry, wheat, light malt vinegar. (7/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, moderate tart, light bitter. (6/10) Palate: medium-light body, moderate carbonation, off-dry tart and astringent finish. (3/5) A true Belgian with authentic fruit flavour and none of the dreaded cough syrup effect. Not overly complex, and it falls a little short in delivering on the tongue, but pleasant. A little more sweetness than I’d prefer (almost but not quite cloying, presumably from the Stevia) and a fair bit less umame. (15/20)

375 ml bottle. Pours deep ruby red to purple colour. Weak pink head disappeared in several seconds. Weak carbonation. Aroma of raspberry, yoghurt, tart wine, berry jam. Taste is fruity sour, dry, tart and sticky; grapes, raspberry, berry syrup. There’s something synthetic in taste and in aroma as well. Nice wrapping by the way.

375 ml paper-wrapped bottle bought at YATA in New Town Plaza, Shatin.

Clear deep burgundy colour with no yeast sediments; One quarter finger head and residual soapy light beige foam which fades in 15 seconds; Excellent sticky lacing with barely notable slight carbonation; Very fragrant and tart aroma of malt, with very strong fresh raspberry, yoghurt tartness, wheat, grape skins and flesh, blackcurrant and sugar; Medium sweet and tart taste of malt, with raspberry, strong yoghurt tartness, strong wheat, grape skins, shades of red vinegar, sugar, light tannic, light wood, soda and lemon; Close to light body, thin but slick palate; Mouth feel is very solid malt base in wheat-thinned background. Yoghurt tartness is strong. Raspberry is fruity sour and not as strong as the aroma. Sweetness is slightly cloying perhaps due to stevia. Not much winey or vinegar factors, but some good wood and lemon ending. Easy!... Hoppiness has no proper hop aroma. Lemon, light tannin plus grape skin in taste; Bitterness is moderate to light in a flash for an abrupt, fair astringent sweet malty finish; Slightly dry after taste. Sweet and tart to mouth.

Comments: Compares to Bacchus Kriekbier, this one has just as good in aroma with fruity berries and grapes, but taste-wise is a bit overdone with sweetner (stevia) and there’s not much Old Bruin’s sourness and wineyness. Still very easy to drink, but a second fiddle to Bacchus Kriekbier. Okay.
