COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Van Honsebrouck is a family owned brewery in West Flanders Belgium. It makes a range if beers including Bacchus, a beer in the local style of the region. It is on this beer that the kriek and framboise is based, a premium fruit beer for which Belgium is well known. Hand wrapped and presented in half champagne bottles. This is a remarkable beer.

On tap. Red blood color, clear liquid, pink head. Aroma of cherries, liquor, kvass and compote. Although heavy sweet, aroma is not artificial. Well done.

Butelka. Miedziano czerwony kolor, piana écru. Mocny zapach soku wiśniowego. Smak lekko kwaśny, dosyć słodki choć mniej niż framboisebier. W smaku głównie wiśnie, ale czuć też lekko zioła i kwiaty. No i cukier, sporo.

Deep purple color, with a medium pink head. Aroma is sweet, with some artificial cherry notes. Taste is not too sweet, with some acidic finish. Not too bad, but I expected something better, since the oud bruin is quite good.

375ml bottle. Pours a clear red-brown with a small, fully dissipating, off-white head. Sweet aroma of cherries and a hint of oak. Sweet flavour of cherries and sugar with a hint of oak and a dry, tart, slightly acidic finish. Light body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. A nice, easy drinking kriek.

375ml bottle, nicely wrapped and presented. Pours a clear deep dark red/burgundy colour, with a medium sized pale pink head. Aroma of sweet cherries. Likewise the taste is also sweet cherries, malt, a hint of sourness, with a lightly acidic tart finish. Nice kriek.

Bottle, deep dark red-black pour with little head. Aromas of macerated cherries and a little toffee. Sweet and fruity, with a light woody sour edge. Interesting but too sweet.

Overraskende lækker kirsebær øl. Tilpas med sødme - men stadig god smag af øl.

37,5cl bb07/2015. En bref: 80’s kriek. smothering any remnant of funk and earth under dense artificial blanket of dessert yoghurt and grenadine. - Sugar-oily deeppink pour, perfect kitsch. Smells of sweet dessert cherry quark heavily doused by industrial red grenadine. Flavour is a tad more sirupy-kitsch than the framboise version, but that might have been the less sugared french export version on draught? Glad that they’ve recently released their "Oude Kriek" fond version (merci MJ?) of this to keep up with the advancing palates of the times willing to deal with honest earth, funk and sour. (hope the sweetness does not spoil the red onion marinade).

Bottle courtesy of Dunbar72. Pours clear reddish brown with a small creamy pinkish offwhite head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is fruity with cookies, artificial cherries, almonds, hay, dry soil and lemon zest. Taste is sweet, sour and fruity. Mouthfeel is round, tart and light to medium bodied. Finish is sweet with fairly prominent longlived tartness. Decent tart cherry presence but too sweet.

375 ml paper-wrapped bottle bought at YATA in New Town Plaza, Shatin.

Looks: Clear deep Burgundy colour with no yeast sediments; One finger head and off pink foam which lasts for 1 minutes;Fair sticky lacing with barely notable slight carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and tart malt, with strong cherry, yoghurt tartness, red vinegar, grape skin, apples, sugar and tannic.

Taste: Mid to strong sweet and tart malt, with cherry flesh and juice, fairly strong yoghurt tartness, very light red wine, grape skin, sugar, strong tannic, soda, lemon and light grass.

Body: Close to light body; Thin but slightly slick palate.

Mouth Feel: Solid malt base in thinned background. Yoghurt tartness is quite strong. Cherry is sweet but fresh and fruity. No cellar or Balsamic but there’s some shades of red wines. Sweetness is strong but pleasant, with a long tannin and fair lemony ending. Not bad!

Hoppiness: No proper hop aroma but strong tannin persists. Lemon and light grass plus grape skin in taste. Bitterness is strong in a flash for an abrupt, mid to high astringent fruity finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry; Fruity sweet and tart to mouth.

Comments: This one has more fruit beer element than a Sour Red with lots of cherry (15% listed on paper wrapping), and no cellar / funk nor salad vinegar Is not what I expected. On the other hand, this is easy to drink with good sweet and sour balance. Perfect as a Summer thirst quencher. Will buy again!
