A typical Flemish beer with a pleasant wine-like taste and a rich past. This dark brown beer, which is matured in oak casks, has a slightly acid aftertaste.

Back in the late seventies, when Rodenbach was so popular that the brewery couldn’t keep up with production, Van Honsebrouck created his own oud bruin and named it Bacchus, which fortunately is still around today, though the heydays of the style have long passed. It is a typical ’Flemish red’ with a yellowish pale beige, sticky, thinnish head breaking open after a while but leaving a steady rim, and a deep brownish wine red colour with haze. The aroma, though not very strong, immediately presents itself as a typical example of the style: red berries, plums, brambleberries, passion fruit, yoghurt, medium dry sherry, vanilla-like tannins, caramel, cloves, figs, wine vinegar. In the mouth, fruity esters open the palate, combined with a sharpish lactic acidity, with refreshing and lightly drying effect, somewhat powdery yet slick mouthfeel with medium carbonation, vinous, with caramelly malts in the background and dry oaky tannins and sourishness in the finish, almost reminiscent of a dry red wine. Very correct for the style and quite enjoyable, but a bit subdued and softer and less complex than Rodenbach. Ideal beer for making ’carbonades à la flamande’, especially when combined with an abt or a dubbel...

Not a spectacular smelling beer. Pours a nice brown colour. The taste is acidic and almost similar to a sparkling wine. Delicious.

On tap at St. Veronus. Brown/copper body with quickly diminishing thin white head. Flemish sour aroma is dominant with minimal oak coming through. Not as tart as the aroma suggests, almost sessionable. Medium carbonation with an abrupt finish.

Jawohl. DAS ist ein trinkbares Piwo.

Bottle from Bierzwerg. The beer pours out in a deep brown colour with low head and medium body. Aroma of acid, nuts and barley. Taste of acid, mild vinegar, woods, oak, green unripe berries and light wine. Hints of barley and bread. Very easy drinkable beer, wonderful. Enjoyed it.

"Fruity, sweet and sour acidic aroma. Bubbly feel, light-medium bodied. Flavorful, hinting at tart apple and cherry. Acidic and malty without being overly aggressive in the sour department. Good session able sour and/or food beer. Glad I got 2."

I had this at Global Brew. Pours reddish brown with a tan head. Taste tart, fruity, sweet. I thought this was pretty good. I would definitely drink this again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

brown reddish color with a beige disappearing head. fruity nose, cherries, wood. taste is cherry, bit wood. lacks some punch, sweet finish, candy. Feels more like a sweet kriek, than an oud bruin. Still, decent. ok

Very dark colour with a touch of red and a dark cream head. Vinigary nose. A little cherry - lovely and sour.
