3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Caytinator (100) - Kaiserslautern, Rhineland-Palatinate, GERMANY - MAY 15, 2012
12oz bottle. Great pour, beautiful cloudy copper color. Good aroma, definitely some fresh hops in there. Taste was strong, this one is middle of the road as far as IPAs go, but I thought it was a noble attempt, and I couldn’t find much to fault. Points for appearance, taste and palate. Back 40 is doing some good work!

Tasted from 12oz bottle into tulip, thanks brentfeesh! I really like Back Forty’s naming and bottle design concepts. It poured a nice reddish copper color with sudsy beige head of tiny bubbles and some lace. Aromas of pine resin, mild grapefruit, caramelized brown sugar, some faintly fruity ale yeast esters. Strong hops bitterness and flavor but with a strong amber malt sweetness as well. Hints of biscuits and honey, apricots. Too hoppy to be called balanced, but well-crafted and complex. Medium body and carbonation, zesty, tart, and fruity aftertaste. Good stuff. So far, very impressed by this brewery.

Draft. Pours copper/amber with a largish off-white head. Aroma is quite hoppy -- citrus, some tropical fruit, a little piney. Flavor is that plus some grainy caramel malt. Medium mouthfeel. Decent,

An average IPA. Very little aroma. Strong hops. All the strong IPA hops, not a mild IPA more in your face... or your belly.

UPDATED: MAY 17, 2012 Enjoyed at the opening of the Back 40 tap room. Lovely copper pour. Great hoppy aroma with tons of big C hops...which I am told is Citra. Tropical. Flavor is solid with grainy Malts and tons of citrus rind flavors provided by yummy hops. Great ipa body. Yum.
