Very dark amber, good head medium lacing. Nice balance of burnt malt/caramel and smooth bitterness moving through the finish. Clean water finish similar to Murphy’s Stout. Big brew, especially for 5%.

12 oz. bottle that shawnm213 picked up for me at City-Wide in South Bend. Why the hell is this rated so low? It’s nice! Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, smoked hickory, smoked meat, and earthy hops. The flavor is also smoky and meaty, with notes of hops, chocolate, dried dark fruits, metallic notes, and a metallic sharpness. Medium bodied, with low carbonation and a smoky, metallic mouthfeel. I like this one- a weird combination of smoky, fruity, roasty, and earthy. Cool beer- get your hands on one.

Notes of roasted malts, bitter chocolate. A lot of flavor for a relatively low alcohol beer. A nice session stout!

This is my first review since joining the site last week. Visited Back Road two days ago and had a sample of this at the brewery (also sampled their house ale and their blueberry ale. This is the one I liked the best). Found it inoffensive enough that I bought a 6-pack to take home. Out of the bottle it pours a dark brown/near black with a tan head that is more fizzy than frothy. The head dissipates fairly quickly with a touch of lacing around the glass. The overwhelming taste is of roasted coffee and it’s a tad bitter. There’s a slight aftertaste that is a little less than pleasant, but not awful. The mouthfeel is thin and somewhat watery. Definitely not a great beer, but it isn’t exactly bad either. Drinkable, but not something I would seek out again.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 holdenn (1855) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 12, 2009
Sampled at the brewery and accompanied by the story of the murderous Belle Gunness. Pours a dark black brown with a thin creamy tan head. Roasted malts chocolate malts, standard fare. Lightly roasted flavors, a touch grainy. Finishes dry. Decent drinkable stout.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 jstraw (1207) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - OCT 18, 2008
Black with weak head / Sour, roast nose / Medium body, watery, acidic, with decent finish / Flavors of unsweetened chocolate and dark roast coffee / Has potential but needs more oomph.
2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 AllAboutStout (605) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 31, 2008
Pours black in color with only a ring of head. Smell is slight coffee. All roasted coffee in the taste. Very thin and watery for a stout. Easy drinking, but the roastiness lingers for awhile.
This needs to be beefed up and a few flavors added.
