I asked the Waitress at the Heston Supper Club what kind of Back Road they had on tap. She said, "It’s a pilsner. It’s called ’Uncommon’". Huh, I thought. That’s a funny name for a pilsner. Sounds like it should be a California Common. Even Rate Beer calls it a Golden Ale/Blonde Ale. Although, it didn’t look golden to me when she brought it. It looked like Anchor Steam, which is THE California Common, kind of deep orange, close to brown. It smelled kind of like an Anchor Steam (if so, those Northern Brewer hops are POPPIN’!). It tasted very fresh, the hops were up front and when I took a drink after having a bite of my salad with blue cheese dressing, it really brought out the sharpness of the cheese and the hops in my mouth. Decent beer, but I am not sure I really want more than one or two of these in a night.

Draft at the brewery. Murky golden with some white head. Malt forward. Bready. Meah.
