On tap at the 10th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival: Pours a deep mahogany ruby with a frothy, pillowy tan head. Sweet, sticky caramel malty toffee aroma has some light fruity notes. Body starts full and sweet with some caramel and brown sugar complexity toward a warming, bittersweet earthy finish. Could use more balance.

Draft at PP Strong Ale Fest ’05. Kinda dark copper pour. Fruity old-ale aroma. Malty flavors, some sweet caramel, fairly fruity still, and maybe a little musty.

I also had it at pizza port in san clemente. Nutty and sweet, tastes a bit like cider and caramel. Full bodied, light carbonation, no head.

Sampled@Pizza Port San Clemente: Bourbon color with a wisp of tan head. Nose is sweet and malty with a little alcohol. Flavor is rich with some oak, a hint of whiskey and a light dry spicy finish. Smooth creamy palate.

draft Pizza Port San Clemente (BTW, ’Back Street’ is Lampost Pizza in Ladera Ranch) it’s a dirty brown color, dry flavor, but doesn’t have anything notworthy

(Draft: Pizza Port in San Clemente, CA) Boy, I don’t know, this old ale tastes pretty close to a mediocre Belgian Strong Ale to me. Spicy, moderately sweet, wheaty, slightly sour, and the alcohol is readily apparent. The nose is malty and earthy, but I’m also getting the mild, yet unmistakeable smell of vinegar throughout this tasting session, though it’s not strong enough to ruin the overall nose. Medium in bodiy with a slightly sticky mouthfeel. Murky, ruddy brown color. Small light tan head fades away to nothing. Kind of an odd beer, and I’m not all that impressed. It is the $2 special at Pizza Port tonight, so maybe it’s the same keg as they had at the Strong Ale Festival last month and they are trying to get rid of it.

At the 2004 Strong Ale Festival. Golden pour with red tones. Nose of sweet hops, yeast, spice, mold? Kind of a medicinal flavor brew, but creamy and smooth, with a nice aftertaste.
