A: The pour is a dark brown, almost black, color with a tan head. S: Fairly typical imperial stout aromas to this one. Roasted malt, coffee, and that’s about it other than a definite acidic note. Not really complex or good. T: Oh boy, why is there this much (detectable) butter flavor in an imperial stout? Not off to a good start. Mildly sweet at points with a really intense roasted, bitter finish. Sort of almost a cigarette/ash tray thing going on. M: The body is pretty light and watery with a medium carbonation. D: Another miss for Back Street. This one just didn’t really do much, if anything, for me. Pass on this one.

Draft at SD Strong Ale Fest 10. This was aged with French oak stave, not sure if it’s a special version. Black pour, thin tan head. Sweet chocolate, lightly roasty, some sweetness somewhat like vanilla, caramel, creaminess, and oak. Nice beer.

On tap at the Vista location. Pours with a tan head that stays over a black body. Aroma of coffee, creamer, chocolate and booze. Flavors of dark (bitter) chocolate, ash and cocoa powder. Creamy bubbles with a mouthcoating body. Very well done.
