The Dunkel is a dark (dunkel is German for Dark) lager from the great beer halls of Munich. It has a malty slightly roasted flavor and a smooth finish. This is the darkest of our regular beers.
Note: Formerly Einfach Dunkel.

Bottle @ Holiday Inn Iowa City picked up @ John’s Grocery. Pours a bit hazy burnt orange appearance with a cream colored head. Big caramel, a touch herbal/woody, light toffee, toasty malty aroma. A bit thin. Slightly fruity, mild caramel, a bit nutty flavor. Alright.

Sampled at Repeal of Prohibition fest 2013 at Schlafly Bottleworks - Pours clear nutty brown with a beige head. The aroma has nutty malt, smooth lager yeastiness, spicy hops and a nice raw graininess. It has a medium smooth body with a good amount of carbonation. The flavor starts rough for a lager (in a good way) with earthy / spicy hops, nuts and toasty malt. The finish has more spice and earth. Comes across more like an ale than a lager on the taste. Quite enjoyable.

[Bottle] Pours reddish brown with a small beige head. When cold, the taste is a little abrasive with some poorly integrated ash. That fades as it warms, with more cherry, malt, and some dustiness. Reminds me of New Glarus OEP with the malt, but definitely not nearly as enjoyable. Quite thin, finish length is average. Overall, not a bad beer, but odd, and didn’t really work for me.

Clear dark copper/bronze.Not much head with even a heavy pour from a bottle. Smells nice some sweet malt, light fruit, spice.toast, raison toffee.Almost oatmeal raison cookie like.Butter/bready. Taste is same with cinnomy spice crispness.mild fruit/a bit more carmelly.chocolate and light smooth roast. Some cherry notes in sweet caramel flavor. Some nuttiness also that I didnt really notice from before.Thought I liked this better on tap,but now seeing why I remember why I liked it on tap from before. I almost want to say its like a good nutbrown ale yet a smooth dunkel lager.
