[Bottle] Pours deep red with a small white head. Aroma is weird. Pistachio and stale cigarette smoke. Well, hopefully that will improve as it warms. After warming, the aroma has changed, but not improved. Now I mainly get musty, mildew scents. Not good. After significant warming (>1 hour), the unpleasant aromas fade, and are replaced by a vaguely sweet (light cinnamon and apple at times) and malty smell. Pretty muted, but at least it isn’t bad. The taste is okay, and better than the aroma. Warming definitely improves this aspect of the beer as well. A little caramel popcorn and hardtack and a really pleasant finish. Really love that malt profile in the finish. Good mouthfeel, long finish. Overall, a weird beer that was verging on being a drainpour when cold, but that drastically improved after letting it sit for over an hour. In fact, I don’t know that I have ever had a beer make such a drastic change as this one did with significant warming. Yet another reason to enjoy an entire bottle over an extended period of time rather than just tick a small sample over the course of a few minutes. My overall score is reflective more of the warmed beer than the cold one, which I probably was going to give in the high 1’s to low 2’s.

Sampled at the Schlafly ROP 2013. It poured an amber color with a white head. The aroma was nutty caramel malt sweetness with some brown sugar, a little biscuit roast and light smoke as it warms. The taste was herbal, grassy, earth, brown sugar, medium toasted malts, some caramel and light earthy smoke. Very good.

HOW IS THIS NOT GETTING CONSISTENTLY HIGHER REVIEWS?!
Tasted at the 2013 Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition fest in a mini Willybecher glass. It poured a clear amber colour with thick, everlasting off-white foam and lots of lace. Excellent balance of malty and hoppy flavours, caramel, apricots, raisins, toffee, earthy, faintly smoky, with the roastiness and bright acidity of dark coffee. Highly complex yet mellow and well-rounded. Light-medium body and carbonation, "chewy" mouthfeel with a great bittersweet aftertaste which eventually finished clean and dry. Extremely well-crafted, delicious, definitely one of the best at the fest. Highly recommended.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 fidelis83 (1584) - Clinton, Iowa, USA - APR 5, 2013
Nearly clear copper pour with a thin, creamy, slightly soapy eggshell head that has good retention. Aroma is woody, toast ed nuts, toffee, light planty, herbal and spicy hops, maybe just a hint of smoke. Flavor is caramel, toffee, and nuts up front, some bready yeast, grass, light peat smoke, cereal, and light spicy and floral hops. Finishes pretty clean, with a pleasant smoky roasted nut fade. Fairly light body with a chreamy to chewy entry, moderate carbonation and neutral to off dry finish. Pretty tasty stuff, I could see myself buying this from time to time if it sticks around. I think I would probably consider more of a Bock than Scottish Ale, though, especially since it is a lager.

My Friends, It can clearly be said that I am the last and the least to say anything about beer. there are far better who can quantify. I have always taken a back seat . However, my friends I was introduced to a Mighty fine brew and the name "Wooden Nickel" from Backpocket Brewing. I will never be the same. My Quest!!! In the Scottish Ale. Wow!!!

Aroma is dark malts/bread, mild smoke and a hint of fruit. The flavor is mildly smokey malts, fruit, a hint of dark bread and a hint of chocolate in the finish.
