3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nearly clear copper pour with a thin, creamy, slightly soapy eggshell head that has good retention. Aroma is woody, toast ed nuts, toffee, light planty, herbal and spicy hops, maybe just a hint of smoke. Flavor is caramel, toffee, and nuts up front, some bready yeast, grass, light peat smoke, cereal, and light spicy and floral hops. Finishes pretty clean, with a pleasant smoky roasted nut fade. Fairly light body with a chreamy to chewy entry, moderate carbonation and neutral to off dry finish. Pretty tasty stuff, I could see myself buying this from time to time if it sticks around. I think I would probably consider more of a Bock than Scottish Ale, though, especially since it is a lager.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz bottle, poured into a shaker pint at approximately 40 degrees F.
A: During the pour, the beer looks like weak tea, with watery spots that appear almost clear. Minimal head forms atop it in the glass, where it resembles a stronger tea with a slight reddish tinge. What head does form dies to a ring swiftly, and leaves little to no tracing behind.
S: A base of warm, toasty bread meets the inside of an old wooden barrel that was used to carry a tree bark mulch, with a tinge of autumn-dried leaves skittering along the surface.
T: Right up front, an earthy bitterness strikes, sharp-edged and lined with smoke and damp wood. It quickly fades into a sweet, toasty caramel malt, before the finish recedes as something not unlike a lightly smoked toffee.
M: Light with mildly sharp carbonation, this beer is eminently drinkable.
O: This is one of the more unique lagers I’ve tried, and rest assured, it is in fact a bock lager and not at all a Scottish ale. The smoke and malt play off one another quite well. I repeat this beer any time I happen to be near Iowa City (Go Hawkeyes).
