3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 radarsock (480) - Massachusetts, USA - NOV 9, 2012Single 11.2 oz bottle purchased from Hunger Mountain (Montpelier, VT) for $4. To the snifter it pours a richly purplish dark-brown with a trim not-exactly-tan-but-not-exactly-khaki-either head. Like so many in the style, I’m getting a surge of figs and dates, roast, candi sugar, caramel, English yeast, cocoa and hops to the side. Damn fine! Tastes as it smells, however there’s an intriguing earthiness by swallow which is tryingly hushed by leather, charcoal and brown sugar. Getting some ginger notes, too. It has this rather interesting warming sensation you find out by your first sip, so not accurately hidden at all. Goes from sweet, to earthy to grainy to...I don’t even know what! Exciting beer nonetheless. Glad I had the opportunity to try out a Swiss porter without having to travel very far. But, I don’t know, this almost too sweet to handle. I’d say this was one of the more unbalanced porters I’ve had. Finishing it, though.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 andyhwcinc (1136) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 7, 2013
Purchased at West Lakeview Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a nice quiet Tuesday night nursing some bum legs. Appearance is a rich, thick black with a modest, frothy tan head. Aroma of mocha, mint, chocolate, light vanilla, coffee, and roasted malt. Taste is rich in roasted chocolate malt, biscuit, finishes dry, one previous reviewer stated it tastes as if you have two pennys in the back of your mouth, and it does have a lightly metallic finish which is done well. I think this stuff is pretty great!
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Marstonlad (171) - Helsinki, FINLAND - MAY 3, 2013
Draught at Viisi Penniä, Helsinki. Pours black with a little frothy head that leaves lacing on the sides. Aroma of roasted maltiness, plenty of chocolate, some licorice and coffee - very rich and varied. Taste is richly malty and roasty with the flavours of coffee and chocolate strong. Alcohol is hidden well. Balance is decent; hoppiness is fairly mild. Palate is medium to full bodied, very sticky and flat. Nice roasty, rich maltiness in this strong porter but could have been a bit fuller. I also prefer a bit more hop presence and bitterness in the finish.

Pours pitch black with a smooth light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, hints of licorice and coffee. Taste is roasty and smooth with notes of salty licorice, ash and hints of coffee. Finish is smooth and slightly roasty with some fruity notes and hints of licorice. Quite tasty and balanced porter.

The flavour is roasted malt, milk coffee, hoppy bitterness and some dryness in quite balanced manner. Not bad at all.

Draught. Black. Black berries, salty licorice, a bit of burnt/overroasted malts. Body is slick, surprisingly light, although intensly flavourful. A bit of chocolate, burnt rubber, dark licorice. Swell finish with slightly vanilla-ish burps. Ok, but lighter bodied salty stout.

Draught at Viisi Penniä, Helsinki. Pours black in color with a thick and creamy tanned head. Licorice hits you instantly in aroma. Later on appears notes which are more like roasted coffee notes and milk chocolate. Slightly salty notes of licorice in taste. Some roasted notes as well. Strong notes of licorice in aftertaste.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 mrhoppy (867) - Santa Clara, California, USA - APR 15, 2013
I know why they call it Two Penny. I took a swig and let it sit on the back of my tongue. There it was the same flavor you would get if you had a couple pennies in your mouth only not as strong of flavor in the beer. I really like the smooth rich woody flavor. Sweet and strong bitter, coffee and cork. Vanilla, chocolate, green coffee.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 marcus (5004) - Sacramento, California, USA - MAR 29, 2013
Bottle from Star Grocery, Berkeley. Pours black with a tiny tan head and a chocolate and treacle aroma. There is a slightly harsh chocolate and coffee flavor with a bitter treacle finish. This is a hearty brew without a smooth flavor.
