Name change in August 2011 from Blandford Fly
With the hot summer sun beating down, the patient fly-fishermen of the Dorset Stour await their catch. These ’Flyers’ are celebrated in this warming ale with ginger overtones, rumoured to be originally included to remedy the bites of the infamous Blandford Fly. The rounded sweetness of this medium-bodied brew makes it an ideal and refreshing accompaniment to a hot lamb biryani or spicy crispy chilli beef.

Light clear amber with a light white head. Smells spicy with cinnamon and ginger, malt and a light fruity citrus. Medium thin body. Tastes like a normal bitter with malt, caramel being the defining elements with a clear ginger kick. Unfortunately the cheap pasteurisation leaves a chemical element on the finish. Nice spice attempt. Would be better as a cask.

Pours slightly hazy pale amber with two fingers of soapy off-white head, good retention and excellent lacing. (4/5) Nose is ginger and not much else. (4/10) Taste is moderately strong sweet, mild peppery spice. (3/10) Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, sticky finish. (2/5) A bit of a sticky mess. Basically ginger beer, and certainly not an ESB. And not very good. Drank half, got bored. (8/20)

0.5 bottle. Clear, gold color and a small, white head. Aroma of ginger, citruses, and delicate pale malts. Taste is also sweet and mostly ginger; also some cloth and what seems to be a dish soap - hard to detect other notes to be honest. Light to medium body, slick texture, and soft carbonation. Finish introduces some long-awaited malty and yeasty flavors. Overall a bad beer, doesn’t resemble an ESB at all and it wouldn’t be a big issue if at least it was good.

Bottle. Pours clear darkish golden with airy but stable white head. Clear aroma of malt and yeast, with notes of hops and ginger. Bitter flavour of hops, with sweetish notes of ginger and yeast and some rather unpleasant touches of detergent and stale malt. Sweetish and mildly bitter aftertaste. Not my idea of fun.

Flaske: Mørk ravfarvet klar øl. Mærkelig duft af kogte grøntsager og jjulekrydderi. Smagen er domineret af kemisk julekrydderi. Virkelig ikke en særlig god øl.

Dark golden with a small white head. Aroma is ginger, bread, biscuit, floral, light earthy, good but weird. Same in taste, with some honey, very sweet. Sweet aftertaste. Cloying.

500 ml bottle bought at foodGARDEN in D2 Place, Lai Chi Kok.

Clear honey amber colour; Three-quarter finger head and white foam which faded in 30 seconds; Good sticky lacing and fizzy carbonation; Fragrant and sweet aroma of ale malt, with strong ginger candy, Ginger Ale, caramel, light toffee, sugar, light lemon and very light grass; Medium sweet taste of malt, with strong toffee, ginger candy, light prunes, sugar, spices, dry biscuits, yeast, light lemon, light bitter hops and thin grass; Close to light body, Slick palate; Mouth feel is good strong malty body with very strong sticky toffee, topped with sweet Asian-style sugary ginger candy, soda-ish prunes and strong spices. Wasn’t quite the sweet taste I hoped for an ESB, but the toffee sweetness seems to work fairly well. Quite okay… Hoppiness is light lemon and thin grass in nose and taste. Bitterness is low for an mostly sweet malty light astringent finish; Quite dry after taste. Easy and sweet to mouth.

Comments: Being not much of an ESB fan due to the style’s low sweetness, I kinda like this one in a strange sort of way - very sticky toffee (I like it) but with the ginger candy sweetness with is kinda awkward to the mix, like an outsider. Overall though it still works, if you don’t mind the low hoppiness. Quite likeable really.

Copenhagen 5/1 2015. 50 cl bottle from Netto. Pours clear gold with Small White head. Dissipates quickly. Aroma is sweetish and a bit metallic and with hints of garlic. Low carbonation. Rather weird taste of slightly artificial ginger. They recommend it for Indian food. If so it should be so strong that you do not notice the beer.

ginger prevails in the aroma, also the shades of fruits and spices... the taste is spicy, with notes of malt and ginger and hints of garden fruits... sweet and, a little bit, bitter aftertaste...
