Cask at a Wetherspoons. Amber in colour with a slight head. Floral and citric aroma. The taste is similar but with a touch of caramel. Light-medium in body and a smooth, dry mouthfeel. The hops never come to much and so the finish is sweeter rather than bitter and quite bland.

Spicy and slightly sour orange-like smell with a distinct aroma of butterscotch and vanilla. The flavor has a distinct taste of butterscotch and vanilla, and in the aftertaste there’s a sour bitterness. Really disgusting beer in my book! I do not like butterscotch / diacetyl!

Cask, handpump @ The Worlds End tied house, Taunton, Somerset.
Deep tawny copper that is not quite bright but shimmers in the light with minute particles in suspension. Headless, a full pint but not a bubble to be seen atop. Distant aroma of rusty, tannic malts, dusty old hops and praline. Flavour is just as distant. Sweet, dark, caramelised sugar front, wood and dust mid-palate; the malt and hops give an earthy mustiness to it that ensues into the swallow. A little rust makes it clap-out, the length a continuation of the palate. The body is featherweight, the flavour so subdued its alarming. Overall its sweet, too softly spoken and lacking backbone. A boring bitter.

First tasted this in the Saltcot, Saltcoats (JDW) in July 2004. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear copper red in colour with a thin white head. Poor aroma with a hint of sweet malt and little else. Thin watery mouthfeel and poor lacing. Pale malts give an insipid sweet note which lacks complexity and depth. Strong metallic notes from the hop resins in the long aftertaste. Finish was weak and flavours ran out of steam ages ago. Had a very slight resemblence to Castle Eden but this was a struggle to finish. Poor real ale and one to avoid on this showing.

[701-20070926] Cask @ Ship & Shovell (London, GL). Wet ferret-like aroma has light resin or caramel notes. Clear, orange amber body with a quick bubbly white head. Generic fruit flavour has a nice doughy yeast finish. Medium body. Repeatable, mild but nice.

Hazy light amber coloured ale topped by a nice off-white film. Shy aroma is pretty grainy and almost devoid of hop flavours. In mouth, it is frankly plasticy upon the finish. The yeastiness is a bit too phenolic for a session ale, kinda chemical. A rare case of a bad yet fresh cask ale for me.
