3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Northbound Smokehouse (Minneapolis, Minnesota, 20/2/13)
Color is dark brown with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is roasty and citrus. Taste is almost all bitter with a very light underlying sweetness. A decent beer, but I’m surprised they’re calling this a stout. If not for the name I would have guessed it were a black IPA. I had to be sure after the first sip that I was given the right thing. It might not have been so surprising if not for the fact that the nose was overpoweringly hoppy.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Had a delicious pint from the nitro tap. Trying out a rating on a bottle. This was my favorite of the Badger Hill beers. I would recommend picking some up if you find some. They had a pretty nice tap room, too. I’d recommend a visit there.
Coffee, chocolate, toast, and a little bit of yeast aroma. Very dark brown with a frothy head. light sweetness, lightly bitter, medium body, lively carbonation, roasted flavor at the finish.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Dense sienna brown amply capped with mocha foam. Bakers chocolate, birch bark and muddled red fruit aroma. Healthy malts with minor representations of citrus that can seem medicinal. The bittersweet flavor offers dark roasted coffee and its clanging astringency, and waterlogged wood and chocolate. The meaty, rustic roast that carries the best examples is mostly absent here, outshone by mild spicing and the bland acridity of the thin black malt. Texturally hollow, though this is not always the case with this beer.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from bottle into a pilsener glass. Approx. 60⁰ F. Pours a black color with a nice brown toward tan head. Moderate carbonation. Bubbly lacing. Head fades within 7-8 minutes. Smell is predominately roasted, perhaps coffee, which remains after the first taste. Smooth mouth feel, almost creamy. Hop bitterness comes through in the middle and remains in the aftertaste. I’m no expert on what stouts are "supposed" to taste like, but I like this beer a lot.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. A very dark, roasted-coffee-malt flavor, which was very strong at first. As it warmed up, it became more palatable, but was not "easy" to drink.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle, 12oz. A big, foamy light beige colored head sits on top of an unclear, dark reddish body. The aroma has some roasted malts, with coffee, some dark chocolate and a hint of bonfire. The flavor has a nice sweetness, some roasted kind of bitterness, bonfire notes and coffee. A little touch of dark chocolate too. Full body and a nice carbonation level. Soft. Long roasted finish. Not a superb one, but easy drinkable and well worth repeating. 140118
