Seeking out the treasures of the countryside and making the most of local ingredients is an art shared by Badger and the wily poacher. Badger's Poacher's Choice captures unique rural flavours in a smooth, dark ale enhanced by a touch of liquorice for spicy sweetness and damson for a soft, subtly fruity taste. A gutsy ale that's worth tracking down.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber colour with a foamy off white head. Aroma of dark fruits, cola, damsun, some strawberry jam, slight liquorice and spicy hops. Taste of dark fruits, damsun, raisin, liquorice, some strawberry jam, subtle biscuity malts and spicy hops. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A bittersweet, fruity, spicy hop bitterness in the finish. A very fruity ale, strongly of damsun and spicy hops. Quite rich and sweet but pleasant overall.

500ml bottle. Dark brown with a thick head. Strong spicey aroma with tons of damsons and plums. Taste is bitter and more spiced plums. One of my favourite bottled ales.

Bottle at home. Pours clear amber with a thin white head. Aromas of raspberry jam, toffee, light spice, sweet cordial. Taste is sweet too, lots more red fruit. Too sweet for me.

Served in a snifter from a 500ml bottle. Pours clear ruby-brown colour with a thick off-white head. Aroma is raspberries, plums, dark cherries, hint of molasses and liquorice. Taste is sweet and rich in fruity flavours without being sickly. The fruit combination is a rather amazing and tasty mixture of raspberry, dark cherry and plum notes, slightly bitter pleasant aftertaste. Medium body with medium carbonation. Very smooth, very unusual and very enjoyable brew.

From the bottle. Red cherry color and aroma with a small head. Fruity flavor of grape and plum. Slight sweetness. Strange for a strong ale but pleasant.

500ml bottle. Clear amber colour with a one-two finger white head. Aroma is sweet and fruity, red berries, plum, almost like a fruit cider. Taste of liquorice, berry fruits, plum, malt. Medium body and carbonation. Sweet and fruity. A little unbalanced, the dominant flavour seems to be liquorice which is a bit weird, probably needs more spiciness, hops. Too sweet.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Nice dark ruddy brown in colour, and not as overly fizzy as some bottled Badgers. Sweet and fruity. Definite hints of cough syrup. A little unbalanced, needs some nice spicy hops to make it come together. Boozy and yet not satisfying, pear drops. Overall, interesting idea but a bit disappointing.
