3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jonno (1454) - JAPAN - JAN 1, 2012
Bottle. A pretty good version of the classic style. Probably not a full in flavour as say Weihenstephaner, but every box is ticked nicely. Smooth body, banana, clove and some bubblegum. Good length soft bitter finish. Well made.

at bulldog in tokyo. deep shade of golden with a steady white head, aroma of porridge with honey and banana, some artificial banana flavours, hint of sourness, steady enough hefeweizen
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 KyotoLefty (3752) - Kyoto, JAPAN - SEP 2, 2008
UPDATED: AUG 2, 2009 Dark golden / brown, with orange. Very cloudy, tall foamy head. Fragrant aroma of banana, clove, all kinds of fruits. Slightly cake-like. Bit wheat malt flavor, like a banana cream cake. Sweet, just a bit cloying, but thick and rich. Could use a touch more balance, but generally good for a sweet-type weizen.

A flavoursome, superior Japanese hefe. Cloudy gold with moderate suds. Rich, grainy and rounded wheat aroma - sugared Weetbix. European Saaz? Soft mouthfeel that thins in the swallow. Breakfasty wheat flavours with good clove notes and minimal banana. Did I mention the wheat? Very solid stuff. I’m not a huge fan of the style but this impressed. Glowing hay in color with a quickly diminishing white head. Sweet aroma of banana, yeast, herbal spices, and clove. Full bodied. Flavor is a bit off, but not bad. Spicey, yeast, sweet malts, and some banana. Not a bad hefe, but I can’t say it’s worth picking up twice.

My Bottom Line:
This Weizen’s honeyed bananas submit to a soft fizz before spicy, herbal hops successfully reach equilibrium.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A thin veil of foam lays atop the honeyed gold haze.
-The round body remains cushiony and therefore the beer is easily downed.
-Yeast offers esters and a pleasant spicy character.
-This straightforward Weizen wasn’t that memorable, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a solid example of its style.
Bottle; thx Tim!
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 yeeeeeeeees (5) - Shinjuku, Tokyo, JAPAN - SEP 11, 2005 does not count
A lingering cobweb-like head sits atop a lovely misty, rouge colour. Potent aroma which has greater complexity than most Japanese weizens. Why? Because it doesn’t smell like a candy shop. Spicy banana scent reminiscent of cloves or coriander. The taste lives up to expectations. Effervescent tangy front, spicy mellow rear and an overall malty vanilla mouthfeel. Light, well-balanced and refreshing. Marvellous effort.

A cloudy golden red hue, bannany nose, fragrant spicy light mouth with cloves, bananas and a refreshing finish. Excellent summer beer.

Looks nearly identical to the Apple Lager I just has. Slightly hazy golden but a bit orangey with a white head. Banana and cloves as should be, no tangy off scents as a few other Japanese Weizens have had. Bingo, the chaps at Baeren score another bullseye! A tasty Weizen true to style, very good. Strong banana and mild spice, some vanilla in the follow. After trying their 3 newest brews (Chocolate Stout, Apple Lager and now this), a road trip to Morioka is on for this weekend!
