2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 GG (1980) - NorCal, California, USA - FEB 7, 2006
While I admit that the brewer was doing something different, which I always will admire, this one just didn’t do it for me. A pitch black pour with minimal head, the nose just didn’t have much punch for a porter. Slight hints of roastiness but that’s about it. Mouthfeel was thin, flavor was roastiness and some bitterness. I didn’t taste anything that was remotely pumpernickel nor bagels so that was pretty poor. An average beer. Nothing more.
2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 austinpowers (2827) - New York, New York, USA - MAY 8, 2003
This beer comes from the brewery that brought us Nude Beer, which was actually quite good, but it was gimmicky. So I shouldn't be surprised by this bagel gimmick - that Coast Range Brewing supposedly puts a bit of actual bagel in each beer. Hoppy oiliness in each glass with very little sweetness leaves you recoiling from the burnt timber taste. Considerably more bittered than other porters and veering heavily into stout territory.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Oakes (10941) - Savusavu, FIJI ISLANDS - MAY 4, 2003
Very dark brown, opaque. Supposedly made with pumpernickel bagels. Bready crusty, toasty, woody aroma. Thin body can't hold like flavours and some hoppy dryness fades into bread and then into nothing.
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 nick76 (4086) - Tampa, Florida, USA - MAY 20, 2007
The aroma is quite lactic with heavily toasted malt, chocolate, and brown sugar. I’m not really feeling much pumpernickel here maybe a little rye. The appearance is dark brown with a tiny head. The flavor is acidic with all the elements from the aroma plus a tiny bit of pumpernickel but not nearly enough. The palate is thin with a bitter aftertaste. I am not in love with this beer but it’s an interesting novelty beer.
