COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One of the best aspects of working in the craft beer industry is the friendly spirit of cooperation that exists among brewers. This spirit manifests itself in many ways, none more indicative than collaboration brewing. Our most recent collaborative brew was in partnership with the Mikkeller guys (idiosyncratic Danish “gypsy” brewers of world renown). Brew day was December 10, 2012 at the Baird Brewery in Numazu. It was a fruitful one. The charge from Mikkel was: “Let’s brew a distinctive beer incorporating as many fresh local ingredients as you can get your hands on.” Into the Heda orchards of Nagakura-san we went, scavenging five types of in-season citrus fruit (aoshima mikan, hassaku, kabosu, yuzu and lemon). In addition to the fruit, we brewed with three types of Japanese sugar (korizato, akato, sudakito) as well as raw wheat from Saitama. The hops we used were all fruit-accented varieties (Summit, Nelson Sauvin, Cascade, NZ Cascade, Motueka). We fermented the wort with our Belgian yeast strain and then krausened at packaging with our Single-Take Session Ale.

RBJG#2. Pours a hazy orange with an off-white head and lacings. Malty aromas of caramel and hints of grain. Some hoppy citrus aromas. With aromas of tea. Medium bodied. Soft carbonation. Bitter finish.

light orange color. Very tart, light nose of yuzu, pepper and oddly it seems like a touch of cayenne pepper. Light mouth, very dry, tons of yuzu and pepper. Über well balanced - if you can say that. Superbly executed. Dry yuzu finish. Nothing shirt of awesome

Draught at Bashamichi, then at Tadgs. Huge citrus fruit nose. Juice and some zest. A bit of spice and something bready, but really mostly citrus. Flavor also tart, rather dry citrus. Refreshing and tasty, but not as beer-like as I would wish. A few of us were sitting around thinking it tasted more like cider. Crisp and tasty, though, and very refreshing. The idea of blending those 5 kinds of citrus didn’t really make sense to me. There’s no way to sort out the flavors.

On tap at Tadg’s. It poured an orange-gold color with minimal head and the aroma was not so strong (maybe it was served too cold?). I got some spicy notes of coriander or thyme followed by a complex citrus bouquet which became more pronounced as the beer warmed up. It was incredibly easy to drink and my favorite beer of the night, a nice balance between citrus fruit and hops making it a pleasent beer!

Tap at Craft Beer Market. I quite liked this unlike Jonno! Pale orange amber colour with small white head. Aroma is very fruity, slightly tropical, pineapple, bit creamy. Taste is nice fruity again, strawberry maybe, tropical, nice bitterness, not too much, but just enough. Tastes a bit like fruit juice mixed with a Pale Ale, which to some probably sounds horrible, but I quite liked it. Very easy drinking.

An everything but the kitchen sink approach like this can come to together, but generally it leaves a beer in search of an identity. This is one such case. Tart, fruity nose with some brown sugar. Lemon, yuzu, well just lots of tart citrus and the brown sugar. slightly phenolic. Has a ’just picked a citrus fruit off a tree and juiced it before adding it to my beer’ vibe running through it’s core.
