Scubatrip (388), Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA Nov 3, 2009 From the bottle, pours a dark reddish brown with visible carbonation and a decent foamy white head. Aroma is earthy malty and rich. Taste is smoother than anticipated. Malty and earthy hops, kinda bitter. Pretty good for a brown ale. Aquilo (249), California, USA Oct 17, 2009 Pours dark cloudy brown with a thick head. Aroma is caramel, raisins, bitter chocolate. Flavor is also a tad sweet. More caramel and raisins. Very roasty and tasty. Not too complex, but a nice full flavor. Very good all around. Theis (3617), Denmark Oct 14, 2009 Draught at Harajuku Taproom. Cloudy red/amber - offwhite head. Nice hoppy, nice bitterness, roasted, nutty, nice malty, berries, bitter finish, fruity, licorice, chocolate. pantani (1895), Salinas, California, USA Oct 13, 2009 Brown with a nice off white head. Aroma is lightly malty, yeast, light chocolate. Taste is lightly hoppy, slightly oxidized, caramel, burnt chocolate. yalnikim (776), Wellington, New Zealand Oct 13, 2009 14/10/2009. Stubbie from Hashigo Zake. Deliciously balanced, beautiful-looking, hoppy brown ale. Alcohol is well hidden. Malt sweetness and fruity hop is well balanced by a nice pinch of roast and a drying bitterness. Hardly an angry boy though, this is one very smooth customer from a pretty solid looking brewery (from what I’ve tasted so far)... props! dkachur (2319), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Oct 9, 2009 Bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop in Durham, NC. Pours a hazy dark brown color with small white floaties. Large creamy tan head with good head retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate, berries, faint coconut and roasted malts. Taste is chocolate, vanilla, tea, citrus, berries and bitter hops. Very creamy, medium-full bodied. jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 9, 2009 Brown with big, foamy tan head / Smooth nose of chocolate and cream / Medium body, creamy, with good balance and dry, but slightly hot finish / Cooked, muted flavors of chocolate, roast coffee, and cream, with dark fruit notes / Stale character detracts - bottle past prime? ajm (903), Los Angeles, California, USA Oct 9, 2009 Bottle at Vendome NoHo. I am really unclear as to why this is getting passed over in the ratings. This is a very good brown ale. Color is a very dark brown with an engaging tan, fluffy head. Nose is full of hops, light berries, sweet malt. Flavor is all of those in great concert plus roast and a hint of yam. I could drink this often, and probably should.
