I love a brown ale and it was nice to encounter this one in a bar in Wellington, demonstrative of the town’s enlightened beer culture. In terms of appearance and aroma, it was typically brown ale. Nutty russet in colour with a white head and aromas of nuts, dark caramels and even oily peanuts. In the mouth those flavours abounded with silky body, and the warm, slightly dangerous suggestion of alcohol. I must point out that this was not perceived as a fault as it gave a lovely enticing warmth to the beer that suggests a session might be in the offing. I always like that suggestion.

6.2% half-pint draft at CBB, a nice cloudy, nutty brown color with a light beige head, mild fruity/floral but not so strong. Nice creamy mouthfeel, bitter with a subtle nutiness...

The aoma is malt forward. Caramel, brown sugar, toasted malts. Pours a cloudy brown with a mostly diminishing tan head and no lacing. The taste is similar to the nose. Caramel, biscuit, with notes of molasses. There is a taste of grain in the finish with a bitter aftertaste. Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Smoothish mouthfeel. Overall, enjoyable. One of the better Japanese beers I’ve tasted.

Bottle thank to a trade! Pours a hazy amber brown with a tan head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a good amount of dark bread with a touch of sweetness and an underlying light grassy hop note. Flavor has the same dark bread that has a decent amount of musty grass hops.
