Beneath the cool facade of the warrior, a red-hot flame of intensity, determination and, yes, anger burns. So it is with this unpredictable Brown Ale: fleeting malty sweetness and warmth hide complexity, a barely controlled bitterness, and, naturally, a bit of an angry edge. You’ve really got yourself into a situation now. "Anger is energy. Use it, then let it go." Kampai!

Angry Boy Brown pours a deep mahogany color with a light khaki head. The smell is of molasses and light spices, especially nutmeg and black pepper. Wet skunky hops come through. Taste-wise, this beer is much hoppier than expected. Wet skunky, resinous pine hop flavors dominate and the malts take a back seat. The mouthfeel is medium thick, dry, with very light carbonation. Overall this is a decent beer. Maybe a few too many hops for the style with a bit dry of a finish.

Bottle @ ÖÖWF2015: Aroma is malty, dark caramels, slight chocolates. Taste is like the aroma but you add some raisins in there. Mid bitter ending. Pleasant!

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/8/2015. Listed as 7% on the bottle. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/piney hops and dark/bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate/nuttiness, light citrus, pine, and herbal/floral earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/piney bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light citrus/pine, and herbal/floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/bready malt and citrus/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly creamy/bready, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Some light dryness from bitterness as well. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good American brown ale style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/bready malt and citrus/earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

360 ml brown bottle. No date, but the amount and coarse nature of the sediment makes me think this may not be very fresh. Appearance: Hazy mahogany with a khaki head that displays good retention and leaves some lacing. Smell: Loads of medium roasted and chocolate malts, some chocolate, and a slight hop note. Flavor: lightly sweet and very malty with some faint yeast notes adding complexity. Hints of raisins and caramel. Mouthfeel: Light side of medium body; some dryness in the finish.
