COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Beneath the cool facade of the warrior, a red-hot flame of intensity, determination and, yes, anger burns. So it is with this unpredictable Brown Ale: fleeting malty sweetness and warmth hide complexity, a barely controlled bitterness, and, naturally, a bit of an angry edge. You’ve really got yourself into a situation now. "Anger is energy. Use it, then let it go." Kampai!

Had from 12 oz. bottle from Hi Time Wines. Pours hazy amber brown with huge three finger head. Head dissipates slowly leaving behind slight lacing and bubbly film. Aroma is very malty with hints of nuts and alcohol. Taste is stronger alcohol than in aroma with mostly malts, caramel, and nuts rounding out the taste. Somewhat dry finish, just too much alcohol flavorings and a little bit watered down for me.

A very very good brown ale. Thanks SJ for this one. It really had a perfect caramel / roast / and toffee blend. The nice warming alcohol finish really added tot he overall enjoyment.

Bottle: unclear reddish brown beer with small but stable cramy and light tan head, nice lacing. Malty aroma with nutty, roasted and caramel notes. Taste is malty sweetness, notes of orange, nuts, caramel, chocolate and light chocolate, leading to quite bitter, grapefruity, dry finish. Oily texture, medium body, average carbonation. Works well with a stew or a daube.

Half on tap shared with Jonno. Pours brown. Nose is fruity, spicy, some citrous zesty hops and bit of sugary bubble gum. Nice nose. Taste is quite malty with brown sugar and caramel, but with some ale fruitiness and some citrous hop zest. A lot going on in it but it is balanced and works well.

330ml bottle (BierKompass.de)
7+ Lovely aromatic hop aroma, spicy and tangy, yet sweet and fruity too, lots of zestiness. No aggression, no warning flags, a real pleasure for the nose.
4+ Dark russet, a touch hazy though I poured it as clear as I could, lovely tight cappucino head, very persistent, and leaving lots of lacing.
8 Fairly modest retronasals, the zestiness and spiciness from the aroma is all there, and there’s a load of caramelly sweetness too, but it’s again not agressive. Really opens up as you swallow it, the hops just come alive, and the malts show their darker roasted side, with a touch of almost burnt toastiness in the corner of the taste. Superb balance between the components. Everything just fits. No chance of 6.2% showing through this carnival of flavours.
4+ Fullish, slightly sweet palate, pleasant carbonation cuts through any stickiness with ease, making it very refreshing in the mouth. The finish is excellent. Almost everything from the taste is continued, but it’s joined by the lovely bite of the bitter hops. Again, not aggressive, in fact, it could be cranked up a little and still remain superb.
16 Well, as I said earlier - "wow". I don’t really think this belongs in the (totally meaningless) brown ale category, as it is nowhere near either of the traditional English brown ale styles. This is basically an American style ale, an APA brewed with a slightly darker roastier malt profile than normal. However, as such a beer, it’s absolutely outstanding, it is so well balanced. Every sip was a pleasure, and if this was available in my local pub, I think I’d drink them out of it. So refreshingly crisp in the mouth that you feel like you want to session it, no matter what strength (as I say, there’s no indication of its strength from the taste). More please!

Sampled on 12/24/2011. This brown ale pours a slightly cloudy medium brown color from a 12oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head, with nice lacing and good retention. The aroma is caramel, chocolate, nutty, fruity and sweet. A medium bodied brown ale. The malts are caramel, fruity, chocolate and sweet. The hops are earthy and herbal. Decent carbonation. A lot of hops for a brown ale, there is also a whole lot of chocolate flavors as well. There is also a touch of tartness at the finish as well. Nice take on brown ale. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
