The German city of Dusseldorf is renowned for its Altbier. From time to time, apparently, the city’s Altbier brewpub brewers make seasonal specialty Alts as surprise treats for customers. These specialty Alts are known as sticke (secret) Alts or Latzenbier (slab beer). Compared to standard Altbier, the secret versions tend to be stronger, darker and hoppier, according to German beer writer Horst Dornbush. Brewer’s Secret Handshake is our version of a sticke Alt. It is fairly strong (6% by volume), darkish brown in color, and unabashedly hoppy (50 IBUs of US Magnum, NZ Hallertau Aroma, US Perle and German Tettnanger).

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours murky amber with a superbly dense and fluffy off white head. Thick and viscous lacing left about. Nose is slightly subdued but what is there is nice. Very earthy aroma with touches of wood, ground coffee beans and toffee. Cherries play a big role throughout the aroma and taste. The sour cherry note comes in and out of play throughout the taste. Earthy malts and coffee back quite a piney bitterness. Decent length with a touch of a bitter finish. Great alt

Draught at Bashamichi. Medium brown with a bubbly head. Fruity, caramel nose. Nice caramel and fruit flavor, metallic, with cherry, earth, and a very nice, very bitter finish. A well bitter alt. Good stuff.
