Keg at Ushi-Tora. Dark brown with not much head. Aroma is dark roast malt, bit fruity, pine hops, coffee. Taste is roasty malt, grapefruit citrus bitterness in the finish. Perfectly nice black IPA.

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2010 Draught at Ushitora. Brown, very bitter, with big hops and a little dark fruit. Caramel flavors with fruit—cherry and grapefruit. Soft malts, nicely roasted, with licorice and some coffee, great hops. Smooth and luscious. A very good black IPA.

Dark. Aroma of citrus grapefruit, dark fruits, and malts. Nice. Medium, well carbonated body. Strong hops, grapefruit, citrus, light caramel malts. So much flavor packed into this brew. Finishes dry. Hoppy, bitter, tasty. Baird definitely got this one right.

Arrogant Bastard rip and quite pricey, but still a great brew. Poured a dark brownish black with a minimal fuzzy head. Lots of solid dark malts fighting with some big hops here. Quite aggressive for Baird. Well done, although wouldn’t go out of my way at some 1300 yen a pint

Black and mysterious. Smell of raisins and leaves, Assam tea baked in sunshine, blackberry pie, figs encased in rum pudding. Complex yet so drinkable. Simply fantastic...Baird’s best brew, by far.

My Bottom Line:
This bountiful India Black Ale offers a scintillating kaleidoscope of hop resins, blackberry fruitiness and roasted maltiness that dazzles the tastebuds throughout the glass. Quite bitter, it still presents balance within its intensity.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the ruby black.
-The hops possess citrusy tips.
-Alcohol is not a factor in the flavor profile at all.
-This is really similar to their Divine Vamp III...although in a slightly more intense presentation.

On tap at Ushitora.

Had this at "Ushitona" in the Shimokitazawa district ofTokyo with TimE. We both selected this as our first beer that night! A dark brown cola colored brew, no head to mention. Strong citrus/pine hop scent with plenty of rich malt sweetness to balance. Fruity, rich, like a prune dessert (flambes?) A delicious lingering bitterness follows. Tim is writing notes that rival War & Peace, he said "This beer is awesome", I agree!
