3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (6934) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 25, 2013
My Bottom Line:
Mildly caramelized cereals (for the style) are topped with citrusy hops and their wooden depths as resinous bitterness seals this competent Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the cloudy amber.
-The flavor profile is harmonious throughout.
-This is not a heavy example ; it’s quite approachable and engaging.
-This sample was quite young (2013 vintage) and I imagine the aroma will especially come together with a little more time.
On tap at Goodbeer Faucets.

Draught at Craft Beer Market, Tokyo- RBJG#2. Clear golden/amber - white head. Alcoholic, sweetness, sharp hoppy/alcoholic, bitterness, barley, dried fruits, bisquit, raisins, nutty, toffee, caramel, citrus, far too boozy/young/unbalanced.

Draught at Craft Beer Market Toranomon, Tokyo. Deep amber colour with a minimal white head. Sweet honey aroma. Sweet caramel, alcohol flavour. A bit too light bodied for a barley wine.

Tap at the Watering Hole. Murky dark orange amber colour, not much head. Aroma is double ipa style, booziness and hops. Spicy malty too.
Taste is full on, sweet, boozy, bit caramel, touch of citrus. Quite weird, but alright. Seems more like a big iipa than a barley wine. Lots of booze, maybe too obvious, almost spirit-like in the finish. Not bad, but probably won’t rush to have it again.

Enjoyable barley wine. Good viscous mouth feel and a nice malty backbone. Lacks that something special.

Bottle from mane liquor. Pours a dark orange with very little head. Aromas of sugar and candied fruits like nectarine and some toffee. Taste of candied fruits, roasted malts with slight hints of citrus. Dry aftertaste. Good beer.

27/07/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (bottle). Corpo medio-pieno, carbonazione soft. Ottimo Barley Wine, molto americano, molto convincente.

Bomber thanks to Mari and Stephen for bringing this over from Japan. Pours a dark brown/red color with a large beige head. The aroma is very sweet caramel candy. A super smooth flavor if rich grains and massive caramel and candy sweetness. Earthy hops. Very tea-like. In between a hopppy American BW and a sweet English version. Quite likable. Very easy to drink. Nice.
